look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

Straw-colored and slightly hazy, the pour into a chalice ends with an epic, fluffy head that lasts for ages. Sticky foam results in nice lacing. Crisp, fruity aroma has more yeast character at first, but this fades as it warms. Green apple and pear notes emerge at the forefront, backed by a floral hop presence. I would rate the aroma higher, but it just doesn't have enough oomph behind it.

Flavor is nicely balanced with a touch of sweetness upfront. Hints of Belgian candi sugar are detectable. At first this tasted more like a saison, but I had served it while too cold. Becomes more impressive as it comes up to temperature. Ripe apple and pear qualities. The fine bubbles are soft for a vigorously carbonated, bottle-conditioned ale. Excellent balance with just a touch of bitterness toward the finish. Almost no alcohol presence at all.

Tripel Karmeliet is definitely worthy of its high stature. Despite weighing in at "only" 8.4% ABV, it has enough character to stand with the top examples of the style.
