The atmosphere and the layout of the place were "very pubby" (if that makes sense). Long narrow bar with loads of seating and standing space. It make for a lively place and lots of conversation. The crowd ranged from young clubbers to the oldest of the crowd with a pint or glass of scotch/whiskey.
The service was real class. The poor bartender fielded questions from all my friends despite the crowded night. He was a beer guy himself and asked everyone what they through of their pint and was pretty excited when we asked about the whiskey bock and strawberry lambic. The selection was really good with a selection from Emmerson's
and imports. They also had 2 cask on tap with a selection of bottled beer that showcased other styles, such as lambics/sours/bocks ect. It is a great place to cut someones' beer teeth because there is such a variety, I finally got my friends something they enjoyed besides a generic lager. Prices were reasonable with cask and tap beer being the same price as the other generic pints elsewhere in town. The price was acceptable also for the atmosphere and the selection.
A fun craft beer bar in the center of town and it made for a great pub crawl stop or a stop to have a good drink and conversation.

Located just a few metres away from the Octagon in Dunedin is Albar, a cozy Scottish pub. On my visit they had 3 Emerson's beers on tap (Bookbinder, Porter and Pilsner) and Emerson's Bookbinder and Invercargill Nally's Cider on the hand pumps. They also stock a decent range of local and international craft beers in bottles as well as a mean selection of single malt whiskies. The bar itself is quite small with a few comfy lounge chairs and a few booths for seating but it does feel like the sort of place where you could easily sit and while the night away. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about both the beer and the Scotch.
