Old North State Winery and Brewery is located in and part of the 308 Bistro or vice versa. Located in the charming downtown(it is Mayberry after all) section of Mt. Airy. The building has a very pleasant atmosphere. An open seating area in the back with a wine bar and bistro style high tables out in front.

We had a very friendly and informative server plus had a nice chat with Twyla, who must be an owner or manager. Also, had a short, but informative talk, with the brewer, Ben.

Food was very good with FRESH made sandwiches, light entrees and gourmet pizzas. The dessert menu was absoluyely sinful to read! I got the very tasty Southwestern Scorcher Turkey sandwich and the wife had a mighty fine rueben that any New Yorker would be proud of. Sandwiches prices are VERY resonabe at $5.99 and a large 14 inch pizza was $10.99!

The reason for the 2.5 on selection is well...they only had one beer available. In their defense though they are just starting out, May 2009, and have not had the time to ramp things up as of that time. They are a winery first and a brewery second. They plan to brew only during the late winter to late summer time frame....when they are not producing wine. Reason, they don't want the beer and wine yeasts to co-mingle. They had only a fairly tame, yet decently done pale ale, see review.

Overall, a really nice establishment that is trying to do something more. I wish them the best of luck with the brewing operations. The restaurant is good enough on it's own that I would return in the future.

Old North State Winery shares its location with 308 Bistro. When you walk in, there is a bar on one side and a fancy looking deli on the other.

Beer is clearly an afterthought at the Old North State Winery. There is no indication from the outside nor is there any indication inside that this is a brewery. Reading the other reviews, I expected to be told there was no beer available. I did get hopeful, though, when I noticed a little chalkboard sign behind the bar that said "try our oktoberfest."

The paper menus were all about wine, so I asked the bartender whether they had any beer available. I was shocked to hear they had 4 - a pilsner, pale ale, IPA, and oktoberfest. I asked if they did samples and was told they were $2. I later discovered that this was quite a bargain because she meant $2 for all 4 samples instead of the $2 a pop that I had assumed.

The bartender went into the back room and emerged with 4 sampler glasses filled with beer, which she placed on a sheet of paper containing a short description of each.

The highlight for me was the IPA. The hops are subdued and it tasted like an excellent English style IPA straight out of the cask. The pilsner was good. The pale ale and oktoberfest weren't bad but nothing special. I was happy that none of these beers were flavorless.

I sat at the bar and saw that everyone was ordering samples of their wine. All of the merchandise and menus talked about the wine and there was no mention of beer. If I had not read on Beer Advocate that they make their own beer, I would have had no idea they served anything other than the macro bottles displayed behind the bar. Old North State Winery is doing themselves a disservice by not promoting the fact that they're making good beer. At the very least, they should put their beers on the menu.

I have been to this place about four times over the past year or so. I have been holding out on my review until I could try some of their beer. However, I have not had one drop of their beer on the four visits I have been. On two occasions I had lunch anyway but the other two I left after hearing the same excuse everytime: "We just ran out this weekend". Perhaps that is true. If so, they need to eliminate their homebrew and up the bottles or just brew more beer. It is quite frustrating. The bottle selection is okay, mostly macro imports.

The servers and bartenders are always very nice and pleasant, as they should be in Mayberry. I have had the Reuben sandwich and the roasted turkey with bacon sandwich and both are really delicious. Prices were reasonable as well.

Beside the frustrating fact that they NEVER have beer, this is a nice little restaurant in downtown Mayberry. This could be a really really cool brewery/winery if only they step up a bit. I dont think I will try to go here again :(

Stopped in here for lunch today on my way back to Winston. Located just north of the "historic" part of downtown, with all the Andy Griffith fare. I walk in and the place is huge inside! Very deep restaurant with lost of space and tables. In the center of the place on the left is a stage for bands to come and play. Nice feature. The bar is on the right side. Pretty average size. Seats a decent amount of people. Very few people here for lunch.

The lady behind the bar was very kind and talkative. As I was the only one there for awhile, we talked a good bit. She told me the history of the place, and how they've grown. Unfortunately, I couldn't get any of there beer. They ran out the night before! Eek. Of all the times... She said that they had a good band there the night before and they ran dry. They had two brews on tap at the time. The Pale Ale that is listed, and an IPA. Unfortunately I couldn't try the IPA to add it to the site. They carry just a handful of craft bottles as well. I got the Sam Adams Light. She poured it into a room temperature pilsner glass, thankfully.

I ordered lunch. Got the Pittsburgher with potato salad. Excellent sandwich! Lots of roast beef, melted provolone, banana peppers, and onions. Superb. The potato salad was a little bland, but good nonetheless. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get to try their beer, but I will be back. Loved their food, and the service was stellar. Recommend.
