Old Speckled Hen is a product owned Greene King, the largest brewer in the UK. Here in North America the name and the colours of the packaging are similar enough to a bourbon named "Wild Turkey" that many people assume they must be of similar taste. Luckily (or perhaps unluckily if you like Wild Turkey), they are not.
OSH pours a rich amber color with a lackluster head that dissipates to barely the slightest ring of foam in no time. Smell-wise there's plenty of strength - fruit and caramel mostly with some earth tones towards the end. The taste is full of fruity malts, creaminess with just a hint of hops. The balance is a bit lacking... but it's not unpleasant but neither is it complex. There is plenty of creaminess in the mouth-feel and the consistency reminds of Boddingtons.
There is some good here with Old Speckled Hen, but nothing really noteworthy... and given it's high price, this beer will likely get a pass from me in the future.
