Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #33 (Oct 2009):

Bright amber, shiny clarity and a thick creamy lacing resting on top. A little bit buttery and a little bit of caramel; a subtle but pleasing aroma. Smooth and light carbonation somewhat feigns an almost cask-like mouthfeel. Very malty with a kiss of orange and herbal hop. First caramel, then topped with a buttery yeast tone, then some toasted grain. Baked apple and golden raisins within the small fruity ester. Finishes a little sweet with a long linger of malt.

A reminiscing beer, one to put back a few as the night draws on. Delicious.

Mild chill haze which means that this brew must have not been sterile filtered, still a bright orange amber colour with a thick two fingered nitro head shows something about this ale. Fruity aroma with a light caramel and floral hoppy company. Yum … nitro smooth, this is pseudo cask at its best. Creamy smooth, forced at that but it certainly adds to the drinkability for sure. Flavours are thrown around like junk in a cluttered house, clean but just in a scattered mess. Flavours of steeped hop tea, fruity with leafy hop all over. A drop of caramel and bready malt but the soft hop flavour keeps on coming back. Nitro starts to wear off a bit and then things seem to go thin and flat other than the hop flavour of course. One of the better non-stouts in a nitro can, something I’d go back to over the others.

Presentation: 1pint "Draught Pub Ale" can (widget beer). No freshness date.

Appearance: Rich toffee/amber in colour. Pours a magnificent cascading head that rests with a finger thick pure white and tight creamy head, that leaves its tracks on the glass as you drink.

Smell: Delicate aroma of sweet grains and a mild bubble gum-like hop floral nose.

Taste: Silky smooth and creamy, with a robust full body. Rich sweet toasted malts are followed by a raw hop leaf feel on the palate with floral flavours, some earth. Bitterness is more to balance, and it does just that. An alcohol presence can be detected hidden within the mildly fruity flavours -- tastes strong. Finishes with just a touch of dryness and light metallic flavours.

Notes: Abbot Ale is Greene King's flagship ale, and a damn fine English Ale. I'd love to try this brew on cask, but the widget can will do just fine in the meantime.

I'm pretty happy I picked this up today. I was looking around the LCBO for something that wasn't from Ontario and won't break the bank and picked this up out of luck. Best decision in a while.

Served from a can into a pint glass.

A: Transparent with a deep copper color. 1.5 inch head that quickly disappears. Solid lacing throughout. A few bubbles rising to the top.

S: Abbot Ale doesn't give off much of an aroma but there is something there. Has a sweet floral smell to it.

T: For me, this is where the beer shines through. At first, you get a nice sweet taste that kind of reminds me of strawberry-apple juice. Towards the middle you get something that tastes like Lyle's Golden Syrup. Finishes off with a bitter note that lingers.

M: I found it to be a bit on the light side. This wasn't a bad thing as it worked with the sweeter flavours it had. Has a nice smooth texture to it.

O: Abbot ale offers a mild experience with a great deal of character. The smooth and fruity feel of the beer makes it great for a session or replacement for fruit juice.

I still can't honestly believe that this beer is so cheap here in Ontario, Canada. It was $2.10 for a tall boy when i first saw it months ago, it's increased since however.

Pours a dark copper colour with a decent amount of head. Doesn't seem to give off a lot of aroma, but the taste is truly great. Feels like a cask ale, not overly carbonated. Lots of flavour, hints of caramel, maybe some raisins, hard to describe. You will not be disappointed though!

To me, it's a fruity, dark-ish beer with lots of character, at a great price. Seems like a winning combination.
