Notes are from 5/29

It's jet black, and looks pretty oily; it doesn't look viscous, per se, but it doesn't look weak either. The head, a rich sandy one with a heavy creaminess to it, looks like the head on a cappuccino and holds itself proudly higher than one finger for most of the duration and only fading very slowly for the remainder. Lacing is deposited pretty thickly in a network of thin webbing that clumps where it comes together.
The aroma offers a strong backbone of malts, not as hugely roasty as some but with plenty, a touch of smoke and charcoal, and a bit of creamy sweetness. There's plenty of bittersweet baking chocolate up front all the way. If anything, the aroma only needs a little more strength.
The flavor brings up front a little more. Dark chocolate mingles with a bit of creamier cocoa to carry through from start to finish over dark, heavy malts with a moderate roastiness to them. It's almost like a milk stout in how a lactic/creamy quality and gentle sweetness show through though, as I understand it, that is derived naturally rather than added. The ABV is well masked, alcohol giving a little more complexity and warmth, and it finishes out with a note like the mixing of licorice and toffee.
The body is on the full end of medium or, possibly, just ever so slightly reaching full; for an RIS, this is a touch on the light side. It's good, though, with a nice silkiness to the texture and a light crispness that adds just a little too much bite. It finishes semi-sweet overall, very close to semi-dry.

A - Dark brown to near black pour with a dark brown pour. Some lacing, and the foam head has plenty of carbonation.

S - Scents of chocolate, fresh coffee, and dark hearty malts. Has almostr a smoky smell.

T - This has a rich flavor that at first is a sweet flavoring of chocolate and molasses. There is a bitterness of coffee and some raosty malt. The finish is rich with a malty vibe.

M - Very smooth for a RIS and despite the heavy feel is actually very drinkable. Thick feel stays in your mouth.

O - This is a clear winner for the locals to have a solid imp stout made. I'll try it again and the price is friendly for a bottle. Win all around.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Big mocha head that settles quickly. Inky black with a mocha collar and a few stray bubbles that retain.

Smell - Roasty burnt malt. Booze and a bit of licorice fruitiness.

Taste - Fruitiness and licorice right up front. Boozy, too. A hint of cherry. Switches to a bitter roasted malt flavor with a harsh finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation. Boozy. Rough finish.

Overall - Surprisingly decent. Has some nice aspects without any blatant problems.

Pours a pitch black color with a frothy brown head that settles into a small dense cap. Typical RIS appearance.

The aroma is kind of faint for the style. I pick up some light roast, char, and cocoa. More cocoa than anything else. It is a nice aroma just not very strong.

Pretty big chocolate flavor. A nice mixture of cocoa, milk and bakers chocolate. A bit of a roasted flavor but it seems to be mellowed by perhaps an oat additon. The stout has some scorched caramel notes and just a subtle hint of a dark berry. Fairly smooth flavor.

Well bodied with soft carbonation leads to a silky feel. Sweet on the palate with enough roasted bitterness to offset. The ABV is well hidden and the finish is sticky.

A tasty imperial stout. Definitely chocolate forward. Has a nice smoothness in both the taste and feel.

This was my first RIS and I'm glad I chose this one.

Picked up a bottle directly from the Brewery after sampling their other offerings. They did not have this for sample so I winged it....

Very Dark pour, beautiful appearance and smell to it... very chocolaty... nice big heavy mouthfeel but very drinkable and not too much bite.

I picked up a bottle a few weeks after and the only reason I say this is because that is rare. There are so many beers I want to try that when I pick up one I already had it must of been damn good...

A: pitch black body with dark tan head a coupla fingers high; small bits of lace left behind

S: rich dark roasty malt aromas predominant, hints of char and tobacco (?) as well as wet coffee grounds

T: nothing unexpected here, as the taste reliably follows the nose, reinforcing the cold wet coffee and deeply roasted dark malts; rustic and robust, and maybe a little rough around the edges

M: mellow, smooth, bittersweet and drying, slight aftertaste of bitter cocoa; mild stickiness; full-to-medium body

O: a well-done stout, probably just short of outstanding - a once a year (?) release worth the buy if you see it but probably not something to worry about hunting down unless you're a major fan of the style or the brewery

A: The beer is jet black in color. After pouring this into a snifter glass, it formed a quarter finger high dense mocha-colored head that quickly dissipated, leaving only some delicate lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of chocolate malts, roasted malts, and licorice are present in the nose. The smell becomes a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell, except that the chocolate malts seem to be a bit stronger and impart flavors of dark unsweetened and bitter chocolate bars. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels nearly full-bodied and a little smooth on the palate (with a viscosity approaching motor oil) and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation. The alcohol lends a bit of warming to the mouthfeel.
O: This beer is really nice if you like aromas and rich flavors of bittersweet chocolate. It's not as roasty compared to other Russian Imperial Stouts but is quite filling and a tasty treat.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.

Poured a deep brown hue with a one finger frothy tan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured dark chocolate with a touch of smoke.

The taste consisted of the sane roasted elements with a touch of caramel.

The mouthfeel was toward the lighter side of the style.

Overall a tasty user friendly RIS.

Thanks to funkel81 for bringing a bottle by on release day (black friday).

a - opened the corked and caged bottle and filled my founders snifter. poured a pretty sludgy black that settled into the glass like oil. a nice full finger of creamy cork colored head slowly fizzled away leaving a talk of lacing on the glass, but for the most part super slippery.

s - kind of chocolate portery. charred burnt chocolate and burnt malts.

t - ooh...very nice. burnt chocolate leads the way. robust bold flavoring. smooth and nice blend. i dug it quite a bit.

m - fizzy and full bodied. easy drinker. not the thickness that i was expecting, but rich enough. cooling finish.

o - overall, pretty good beer. kind of a cross between a classic porter and a russian imperial stout. i've heard that this one is like the breakfast stout with more balls, but i haven't had the breakfast stout yet. super easy to throw it back and nice flavor, but hard to really stand out as a superstar these days in the world of imperial stouts, but this one is worth checking out if you are into imperial stouts as it was a very solid offering.
