So here we have a new beer garden. One to challenge the throne of the Bohemian Beer Garden. First off this is a couple of stops closer on the N or R trains than its older competitor. So it has that going for it. Studio Square is set a bit off the beaten path yet near enough to two subway lines. As you walk in, the place is pretty cavernous so rainy or cold days can still be busy. The first bar is to the left and there is another room off to the right with tables and a second bar. Everything is new and modern looking, a big contrast to the BBG. A quick walk outside shows rows and rows of new wooden picnic tables and a walkway with an overhang which has beer barrel tables. There is yet a third bar out here as well as the food stations. The crowning achievement is a gas firepit near the middle offering some heat for the chillier days.
Beerwise they have a good mix of Euros, macros and craft brews. Off of the top of my head I recall having Dogfish 60 and Captain Lawrence Fresh Chester Pale. According to the website they seem to be changing a few up now and then and Stone IPA is now on tap. Everything tasted fresh to me as there seems to be a good turnover. Beers come in pitchers, pints and litre mugs. I enjoy drinking a nice pale ale in 32 oz form. I think the litres are also the most economical at $13.
The 3 times I have been there it has ranged from empty on a rainy day to fairly busy on a nice day. Still even then tables were to be had. The crowd seems to be a mix of local Greeks, hipsters, and preppier types. They have live music apparently but I haven't seen it. Other than that the music is generally a bit weird, not really beer hall stuff. Kind of ambient club noise which I don't like. Not really sure what they are going for here.
Foodwise they have burgers, sausages and sushi. While I do enjoy sushi, I dont know if I trust beer garden sushi. The burgers are terrible, steer clear. The sausages however, from Schaller and Weber are quite good and are the choice here. The pretzels werent bad either.
The verdict? This place has its strong points, craft beer, ltires, lots of space and proximity to Manhattan. However it may be just a little too sleek for me and I prefer the atmosphere of the Bohemian. Still, not a bad place to go and good to have options.

Stopped in mid-afternoon on a Friday, and as anticipated, pretty empty minus a few tables of folks. Started to get progressively busy as we got closer to the evening hours. My friends and I inquired about how busy the place got with one of the staff, and he stated it's pretty nuts later in the evening especially on weekends.
Quite a large space, with several bars located strategically in the front, and on the perimeter of the larger open space. Since it was not crowded, we had no trouble getting brews quickly and easily. Didn't really try to engage the knowledge of the service staff, but I had to point out the tap handle for what I had asked for on a couple of different occasions, so that indicated a lack of knowledge to me.
Nice 'new' feel overall to the seating areas, tables, etc, and there was an OK balance between sleek and new with a more chill beer garden feeling.
The tap list was surprisingly good with a couple of Captain Lawrence brews, some decent Germans, and even had Racer 5 at the time of my visit. They still had the obligatory macro stuff, but attention was definitely given to good beer, which was good to see.
Overall, I think that this place leaps and bounds over Zeppelin in JC, but doesn't quite strike the home-like feel of the Bohemian Beer Garden. Definitely worth a stop in the summer, though.

Sunday, and a plan of all sorts of things not happening now as we're meeting in Queens for drink? I know, I know, we promised Scott that we'd never try to drink in Queens again after that other excursion, but that was back in '03, and things could have may have changed; eeked in from Brooklyn in the wake of the wave from Manhattan out, or the one after that, or the one after that, or the one...
Front entrance room spacey huge open, with a straight bar off to the left seating 8 on barrel stave legged stools. A tower of 12 at each end and a 3 tap house sangria tower, I will get my (first) beer on here. Barback holds tiered booze with liter glasses lining the countertop just below, and a rack unit of pitchers down past the bar and stacked in the corner; guess they plan on filling a few. Lots of brick, a large Studio Square mural above the bar on the wall, and press pieces framed across the way; they're new kids and have a bunch already. Drop bulb lighting with glowing neon filaments over the bar and throughout, and a floor so laminate glossy lush wet looking that you could *insert related swim/slip scenario* in/on it.
Up the stairs and down the hallway to a large side room. A straight bar on the far wall seating a dozen+, a cut log split tree table in the center of the room and a pair to each side, and nearly 30 square tables, many pushed together to seat more. Forward windows to the street and some light art.
Back out back outside. There's a raised balcony running a "Z" along the perimeter above the seating areas, with 2 seat barrel tables lining the beam railings and steel rope strung below. It's spacious, widening down along the side around the beer & food area garagey door entrances. Food's done in the one tight corner but they've got the same tap tower set ups as inside at a multitude of stations there, so it's not a "you can only get that beer over there or inside" kind of deal.
Looking out over the seating area, a sea of 1 piece table/bench set ups filling the landscape; roughly 6 dozen tables in rows and rows of rows, and more around the bend. Down the center, large Radee beerbrellas cover as much as they can, but you'll be wrastling for actual shade space. A few Englishy bunched bubble ping pong ball lampposts across the floor. Stone brick floor done throughout with some trees dealt in gravel, a large fire pit/human sacrifice alter up front, and a rear band set up area. Ben says the giant shared wall from the building next door to the yard would be great for growing hops. I offered "or a drunken rock climbing wall". And silence. Okay, his idea is better. I was thinking how little fun this would be during the Winter months but they're got plans, including some sort of vintage/good beer bar upstairs.
Tap selections listed in colored chalk on mounted boards. Flat screens mounted for me to watch the Yankees spank the Mets, but I can't see the TV's anymore as the whole deck area has now filled in with people here to watch soccer. Yes, for real. USA vs. Brazil and by the sound of things, we've just scored (Here's a shocker... we will go on to lose).
18 taps in all; a mix of 9 micros (Stone Levitation & IPA, Sea Dog Blueberry, Captain Lawrence Freshchester Pale Ale & Sunblock Wit, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, Harpoon UFO Hefe & Summer Beer, Abita Light), and 9 mostly meh imports with a few Pils & Hefes mixed in. Started with a .5 liter of the Freshchester Pale Ale and then migrated to a .5 liter of the Sunblock Wit. At .5 liters for $7, liters for $13, and pitchers for $18, the pitcher may very well be the deal here.
Was looking for some eats, so I braved the order/pick up zone, which was a bit of a clusterfuck. There's really no room to maneuver once you've ordered and taken the two steps to your left, so you find yourself tripping over everyone else in waiting when it's time to retrieve your order and amass appropriate condiments. They've got the expected grillables (pulled pork, burgers, chicken, portabella, and probably the best of the wurst) and more, but I'm shaking my head at the beer hall sushi bar in an oooh, I don't know about that, kind of way. Opted for a pair of pretzels with the Dusseldorf style horseradish crystal methstard. All in all, they were pretzels, doughy and warm.
Shortly after opening on a Sunday, the place had filled in nicely. Seated out at the tables, AJ and Kelly expecting joined us, and ooooh, he went right for the liter glass, I see. The place is polished and new, landscaped and well manicured. Beer was fresh, and they had a decent selection, I know they're adding more, I hope they're adding better. U2 Achtung Baby was playing on loop, and then the tunes went downhill from there. Davo says "It's a douchebag den. A Queens mismash of douches" but I've got to agree with Ben's assertion that it's "Very much like the Astoria beer garden if the Astoria beer garden was, you know, good".
