Our approach was to brew this beer with Lactobacilius for a refreshing and authentic interpretation of a classic summer refresher.

A-Pours a fairly clear yellow color. Decent head, it dies but leaves a good lick of lacing.

S-Not a lot like the Berliners I have run across. Lacking that tart lacto note. Seeing that you could arguably call this an 'Imperial' Berliner Weisse (huge ABV for the style), I am not too surprised to see this deviate in the aroma. I get a lot of green apple juice and some semi-funked wheat.

T-Not really tart at all. Much more sweetness than I am used to as well. Lots of apple juice and sparkling cider. I bet this beer's quality has suffered batch by batch. Its missing the desired complexity and tartness.

M-Not bubbly enough. Not tart enough. A bit too full in body. But it still drinks rather easily.

O/D-Was expecting better here. I bet this beer was great in its infancy; Batch 1 or 2. Now I just don't see how this is a relatively desired beer. Its not bad but its probably the worst Berliner I have had.

22oz bomber poured into Cantillon wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden yellow color. Thin and wispy cream-white-colored head.

Smell: Lacto sourness upfront. Slight hint of oak. Clean and crisp. Something reminiscent of Brett.

Taste: A slight sourness is balanced out immediately by a pleasant, though out of place caramel-like flavor. Clean and barely crisp. As the beer warms up to 55F+, a very strong apple flavor becomes apparent.

Mouthfeel: Very watery. Light carbonation. Light bodied.

Overall: Would not buy again. It's not a terrible tasting beer, but it's just not to style. I was expecting a brewed-to-style Berliner Weisse, and instead I got something that was not. This is truly an awful waste of $5.

Bottle share at Proof courtesy of sconnell. Pours a clear straw. Almost no head or collar. Aroma is grassy, funky, and some white grape. Taste is tart, light lemon, some faint earth. Medium-high carbonation despite the lack of head or collar. Good light, crisp body. It does hide the 5.5% well.

500ml bottle poured into a sampling glass.

Pours the color of semen, it's cloudy and very hazy and yellow, pretty gross. Nose is very tart and funky and sharp.

Taste is super tart, I guess it's ok for the style but I'm not a big fan of it at all, it's just too sharp and harsh. I've had a couple of the style and this is just too harsh.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, UCLABrewN84!

Highly carbonated, hazed golden yellow with a small off-white head that falls away rapidly, eventually leaving the glass clean on the way down.

The aroma isn't particularly pleasant, with lots of sharp, stinky cheddar cheese notes, along with some wheat, and some vomit, as well. This wasn't all that pleasant to sniff.

The flavor, too, isn't particularly nice, with lots of funky, sharp cheddar notes, a bit of wheat and lemon, mild sour character, and just a hint of bile. Also, not good, however, the aroma was worse than the flavor.

Medium bodied with moderate to high carbonation.

I will decline future offerings of this beer.

Bottle shared by Grant - thanks!

Pours a very hazy light yellow color with a 1.5-finger white head. The head quickly recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of light malts, green apples, muddled citrus, and phenols, in that order.

Tastes more phenolic than it smells. Light malt flavors with hints of lemon peel kick things off and are joined almost immediately by muddled fruit flavors and phenols. These flavors carry through to the ending.

Mouthfeel is OK. The thickness is a bit on the thin side and the carbonation is slightly harsh.

Drinkability is just not good. I struggled with my glass and would not like another.

Overall there are some major flaws with this beer and although the possibility of a good beer exists beneath everything I'm not getting much of it.

As an update, I received a bottle of this in a recent trade. I opened it and the same flavor profile exists so it's certainly not an isolated incident.

Review from notes 2/6/11. Thanks to THECPJ for sharing!

A: Pours a hazy straw color, very light. Once finger head made up of very fine bubbles.

S: Very funky aroma. It is sour but also has that hay/farm smell also. Little bit of wheat and some fruity sweetness as well.

T: Very sweet, a nice tartness similar to lemons and green apples.

M/D: Light bodied with a lot of carbonation. Extremely drinkable as well as crisp and refreshing. Like this one a lot.

Thanks once again to ShogoKawada for this unexpected extra. Batch 1; Bottle 748 of 1458. Poured from a 500mL bottle into my Bruery tulip.

Hazy titanium yellow body supports a large ghost white head that (being quite active) recedes to a sudsy collar and a faint surface shadow. Light fast running lacing.

Wheat, unripe bananas, lemon curd, and sourdough intermingle with the expected lactic aromatics.

This has the same distinctive yeast note that the Belgian Pale Ale I sampled from White Birch exhibited - very difficult to pin down, but slightly floral and weedy, similar to Bermuda Buttercup but hinting at DMS almost. This doesn't have quite as much of that god-awful durian flavor though (ugh). The lactic flavors suggest buttermilk and butterscotch, adding complexity and and earthy smoothness which offsets the tart wheaty/lemony base. Quite well balanced, less sour than some examples I've tried, perhaps because this particular beer isn't brewed with the addition of syrup in mind.

Light bodied with modest carbonation.

Indeed, a suitable summer libation - an odd but still enjoyable take on the style.

500ml bottle. Batch 1, number 1042 of 1458. Shared with schen9303. Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

A: Pours a nice 1 finger coarse white head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a semi-cloudy pear. Lacing is stringy and light with little cling.

S: Banana, yeast, pear, and sweet rice alcohol. My mom used to make these dough balls during Chinese New Year that she'd dip in fermented rice... excuse the obscure reference, but this smells exactly like that. Brings back pleasant memories.

T: Hints of wheat, banana, lemon, pear, and rice alcohol. Tart at the outset but this teeters off towards the middle, revealing a pleasantly yeasty sweet profile. Bone dry in the finish with a lemon spritz, puckering aftertaste that lingers for just a bit.

M: Light bodied with medium carbonation. Exceedingly lively in the mouth and abrasively dry going down. Dry finish with a puckering, but brief aftertaste.

D: The Berliner Weisse style is without a doubt, one of the most drinkable beer styles, and this brew fits the bill perfectly. Refreshingly tart, light, crisp, refreshing, and rather low in ABV, this is the perfect beer to sip all day long.

500ml bottle shared by largadeer.

Pours hazy pale yellow-green with a decenly formed white head. Looks like watery dish soap almost.

Aroma is tart wheat, lemon, and some slight rancid notes.

The flavor is not so good for the style. Wheat, lemon, and a bad mineral finish. Not very tasty and a little off-style.

Medium-bodied with decent tartness on the palate.

Why is the ABV so high? That's a little off-style. Not too good overall.
