Notes/Commercial Description:
Adam Romanow is our third brewer apprentice. His release is an exploration into a newer beer style, the Black IPA. Black as night, bitter, with a full flavored Cascade hop profile and smooth finish.

Named after Nyx, the mythological Greek goddess of night, who stood at the beginning of creation. As a beginning, we agree Adam is on to something. As he moves on, we raise a toast and hope you enjoy his beer as much as we do.

Poured from a 22 oz into a snifter.

Appearance - Poured into a snifter, dark, viscous black body with a tan head that wisps on the edges.

Smell - By far the best aspect of this beer. Coca nibs upfront, a little chocolate too. Outstanding, delizioso.

Taste - Overwhelming roasty, malty notes. Very nice, simple but enjoyable to the nth degree.

Mouthfeel - Not exceptionally heavy kind of light.

Overall - A great beer whose greatest strength is in the smell, very nice I like it.

A: black with a foamy head similar to Coca-Cola coloring ad a bit long lived. Nice lattice cling to glass

S: dank, but hoppy, slightly rye like

T: like a fine dark bittersweet chocolate, lingers without unpleasant aftertaste

M: smooth but slightly carbonated bringing out the bitters

O: makes me want to investigate more of this brewers offerings. Would definitely by again.

I picked this up today after reading some wonderful reviews about it. Needless to say, this beer DID NOT disappoint.

Appearance- Black, just black.

Smell- Dark chocolate with some dark fruits to go along with it (plums, red grapes). Slight coffee smell as well.

Taste- Divine. Hops, dark malts, and toffee at first then mellowing out to a rich dark chocolate/black coffee finish. Great mouthfeel, drank it cold, so it had a surprisingly smooth mouth to it. I was expecting it to be very thick but it was not.

Overall- Great beer. I am a fan already after only half a glass. It has the hops of beers that I enjoyed when I was younger with the color of a stout and a chocolate finish that just make me glow.

Pours the color of motor oil. Light does not shine through the glass. Thick beige head. Great coating of lace after each sip.

Strong cocoa and dark chocolate aroma.

This is very similar to stout taste wise. Burnt toast marks the predominant flavor. Bitter beginning, middle and end--all from the black patent malt. Richer body than the typical stout. There's a bit of alcohol oiliness on the tongue. The aftertaste is of powdered, unsweetened cocoa.

This beer is as thick and dark as an Imperial Stout, rich and heavy-looking. It's completely solid, letting no light in. The rich medium-brown head is creamy and dense, sitting nearly two full fingers tall and settling with some reluctance. As the beer is emptied from the glass, creamy sheeting is left in its wake.
This aroma has the goods, and I wish it was a little stronger but it's fantastic besides that. There's roast and pine, co-mingling in an excellent way. There's very little char but just a touch, with a peaty note to it. Some citrus zest sneaks out some bitterness, too.
The flavors mingle as nicely in the flavor, with some more dryness on the tongue in an herbal leaf note with a touch of chalkiness. Otherwise, the pine brings a resinous note, but the dryness of the bitterness is cut by the malts and a little citrus juice. The end is woody and brings together the overlying roastiness with the leaf and pine.
The body is on the fuller side of medium. Carbonation is light but there's a nice bite of crispness. The mouthfeel is dry but clean, no harsh residuals on the end as the roast eases away from being too charred. There's a brightness that evens out the drier tones.
