A: Golden beer, with a thick, creamy, large, white head that stays for quite some time.

S: At first it's dry malt, and then you get a lot of floral hops. Nice and clean.

T: The first you sence is the nice blend of both bitter- and floralhops. Then there is a bit of maltiness to it. I also can sence green apples. A smooth, complex beer.

M: First there is a nice creamy tone as well as a tingeling sencation on the tounge. You can't overlook that this beer is a dry one.

D: A nice czech pilsener that stands out from others. This one is a great pilsener that has it all. I will buy this one again, and again, and again (I think you get what I mean)...

Aroma - Very sweet. This is not you usual corn adjunct lager.

Appearance - Slight reddish with a white head and a decent amount of carbonation.

Taste - Grainy sweet malts give way to a well balanced hoppy lager.

Mouthfeel - Thin with a nice amount of carbonation.

Drinkability - Very drinkable.

Pours golden with soft white head that slowly fades to dense layer at the top of the glass, quite dense a bit downsliding patchy lacing. Aroma is very pleasant and soft sweetish malt with mild floral hops, hints of pine, slight citrus, it is a wonderful combination, I spent some time just enjoying the aroma.

Taste is a bit harsh grassy and sligthly lemony hops; unfortunately the taste is soon gone and just pleasant and rather long lasting bittery aftertaste remains. Mouthfeel is about medium, average carbonation and very slight and smoothl almost unnoticeable alcohol warming.

Overall, nice and quite drinkable beer.

The beer pours a nice gold color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a wondefully crisp and clean pilsner malt and Czech hop aroma. It's dry with a light bitterness. The taste is decent. It has a quaffably crisp and refreshing taste that's so simplistic, yet quite enjoyable. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a low bodied beer with good carbonation. This is a smooth drinking lager. It's got an authentic character to it; very nice.

A: Pours a crystal clear pale yellow with decent head.

S: Somewhat unappealing with a musky corn aroma. Perhaps if there were a bit more hops it would liven the aroma up a bit.

T: Pretty standard Euro lager flavor with a cooked corn flavor along with some grassy hints with a dryish finish.

D: Doesn't really stand out from the crowd but it is very drinkable. Decent no-brainer lager.

Poured from a 0.5l bottle into a 0.5l branded Staropramen mug.

Appearance: Clear, translucent, and golden. Fizzy head that dissipates almost immediately.

Smell: Hoppy overall. Pretty standard for a Czech pilsner.

Taste: Hoppy with kind of a sweet aftertaste. Nothing special, but pretty good.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, with almost no noticeable carbonation.

Drinkability: Pretty good but nothing special. I would only get it again if there was no other choice.

Poured into a pilsener glass. Slightly orange straw color with a nice white head that's fluffier than most and doesn't fizzle out. Aroma is toasty and grainy, possible corn adjunct character? Flavor is very grainy up front and then washes into a grassy, slightly metallic hop bitterness. Some astringency. Thin and watery. The bitterness is pretty solid for a pilsener but that's the only interesting thing about this beer.

Trois-Rivières SAQ

A: Pours into a clear light amber color, nice carbonation, fair head

S: Very nice noble Czech Saaz aroma on the opening, also little but good base pale malt odor on background

T: Grassy, floral, malty and good hoppy taste, little sweet on final, very thirsty, the taste of alcohol is nearly absent

M: Very thin, lacks in beer body

D: Good Czech lager, summer-time beer, not perfect but very drinkable

A: Clear, bright golden yellow color. Poured a thin fizzy white head, but had fair retention. Light, inconsistent lacing. decanted continuously.

S: Sweet malt, grains and cut grass. Lightly bitter.

T: Clear grain flavor. Fresh hop bitter character especially in the finish.

M: Medium body (especially for a pils). Ample carbonation. Crisp, dry and clean.

D: Definitely drinkable. Clean and refreshing. This was a good find - better than the average euro-lager/pils.

Starbrno pours a golden color with a white head from a green 11.2 ounce bottle. The aroma is mildly skunky hops. The flavor sarts with hops, once again mild and skunky, as typical of Euro lagers. Then a mild sweet malt lurks toward the back at the end. Typical Euro lager, drink it cold, there were some cardboard flavors as it warmed.

A: Deep gold color with good clarity and mild carbonation. White head starts out firm, but quickly disappears.

S: Smells of raw malts and some straw. A hint of lemon is in the background.

T: Starts out with a dry malt flavor that is only slightly sweet. Bitterness is well balanced and has a strong pepper flavor. Finishes fairly clean, with some lingering lemon bitterness.

M: Medium light body is a little slick. Carbonation level is right where it should be.

D: I didn't find anything all that special about this. Still, it's fairly well done and a fine session brew.

This is a good Czech pilsner, tasty, very clean, crisp, nicely balanced and refreshing, yet not as full-bodied or strongly flavoured as some.

It's slightly pale amber with a large, faintly off-white head that dissipates slowly to a thin top with a hint of lace.

The aroma is a nice pilsner smell - toasty grain, bread, hay, honey, hints of pine and herbs.

The taste is mostly herbal with honey, grain, hay, and a hint of fresh apple. It has great balance and starts with a smooth, silky honey sweetness with a little toasty bread, smoothly morhping into a tingly herbal, lightly bitter, finish that rides hints of hay, grass, and grain. It's very clean, yet flavourful and has nice sublte complexity, yet the flavours can easily be lost if it's tood cold or if one has, say, a cold.

11.2 oz bottle just copped from New Beer Distributors on Chrystie Street in Manhattan...
This is a Czech Pilsener in the true sense of the word...
Appearance: Light-golden hue, massive head, tremendous amount of lacing...
Smell: Strong, assertive, musty aroma with hints of slight hops, and vanilla...
Taste: Crisp, clean, refreshing... Light on flavor, but an enjoyable, easily drinkable nonetheless...
Not bad...

I loved in Czech for 6 months and I would have to say this was one of my favorites. Most of Americans didn't like it as much and opted for the less pungent Gambrinus. Great example of a fine Pilsner. I tried back in the US and I would have to say it's not the same. But, still a great beer.

11.2 oz. bottle,

A: Pours almost an amber, a shade or 2 darker than an average pils, fizzy head with fair retention, no lacing.

S: Has the unmistakable scent of Saaz hops on opening the bottle, even though it is lighter than I would like, malt is certainly more evident than in the style.

T: Malt is very bready and shows itself off almost like a Vienna lager, though the overall flavour has distinct notes of DMS. Saaz hop bitterness saves the beer somewhat since I like the flavour of that varietal so much. Muddy flavour, if one gets that, the malt and hops don't really complement each other, they're both off doing their separate things.

M: A little too much carbonation and too thin overall, lacks a real crispness.

D: A below average Czech lager. Has its problems, but in the end really didn't have a problem finishing it, glad I didn't buy a sixer, upside is that it's one of the least expensive imported beers around.

Pours a clear goldens straw color with a nice soapy pure white head. Perhaps a shade darker than most Pils. The aroma is of cracker like malt, pepper, spicey Saaz hops; right on for the style. The taste is more of a doughy malt, which kind of neutralizes the spicy hop to a small extent. However the grassy, spicey hops are still there along with a light grainy/cooked veggie taste. The feel is light but not watery, soft to active carbonation; finishes a tad dry. A decent Pils that does the job if looking for a Pils. Not the best but fairly solid.

From the shelf of Town and Country to the comfort of my home, on to the beer:

The color is clear gold with lots of carbonation action going on in the body, typical of beers this style. The smell is average, a bit grainy, some DMS notes, and traces of malt. I had some hopes for this one, but there's something in the flavor that didn't quite appeal to me. It was light in flavor for a pilsner, with some sour grains, some cereal notes, and hop flavor poking its way around. The flavor was chaotic for my liking, and probably won't have me revisiting this one again.

Pretty basic Czech Pils. Nothing too fancy, yet nothing to snub either. Deceptively effortless in the cleanliness and crispness of this brew. The beer comes off with a moderate malty sweetness with lighter hints of grain flavors and astringency, light vegitable notes that are quickly dominated by spicy, earthy hops (Saaz?). Efforvescent and playful carbonation aids in the cleanliness and drinkablility. Tough to make this beer this clean. Absolutely nothing wrong with this beer, other than being lackluster.

Bottle: Poured a crisp yellow color beer with a nice bubbly white head with limited retention. Aroma of floral malt and bohemian hops is subtler then I would have wish. Taste is slightly skunky which is to be expected of green bottle making a 3000 miles trek to the store with some light floral malt and some light hops. I have to admit that this is a bit deceiving and I was expecting more hops and bigger malt or something closer to Pilsner Urquell anyway.

More filling than anything domestic, but inferiour to many of its Czech counterparts in many ways. Some staleness in the aroma, though hops are present in the distance. A fair size of malt in the body with good carbonation. Transparent golden in colour, very light in colour with little to no head. Lacking flavour but quite easy to drink. Easily appealing to a mass market, and pretty fair stuff.

Fine Czech lager. Its quality has not diminished in last 5-6 yrs and today I perefer it to Staropramen, Budweiswe/Czechvar and a couple of other classic beers. Nice color, rich malty taste, picturesque crown - everything you can expect from a premium golden lager from Moravia. Recommended!

Bottle at Rockbaren in Gothenburg.

Golden color with a white head.
Malty scent and taste, but there are hops in there as well.
Not much bitterness.

It's a bit tame, too much malt compared to hops.
More hops for the people!

An average Czech pils, but better than many lagers.

Pollen-laden goldenrod with a single stream of carbonation leading to a manila colored cap. The foam is so dense that even with a furious rate of bubble poppage, it has lost very little height in the several minutes since the pour. The amount of lace looks to be more than a little and less than a lot. Not a bad look.

The nose is standard issue Euro pale lager. It isn't hoppy enough, in my book at least, to be taken seriously as a pilsener. There's a little musky fruitiness to go along with the noble hops. It's low on grassy aromas and even lower on floral ones.

On the palate we're talking run-of-the-mill EPL. There's an acceptable amount of malt, or at least it seems so given the relative lack of hops. The flavor profile does nothing to stand out from the crowds (make that hordes) of lagers that are pale and European. Whatever slight fruitiness I appreciated in the nose is nowhere to be found when the beer comes in contact with my taste buds.

The end is as pedestrian as the beginning and the middle and is (thankfully) brief. This isn't bad beer necessarily, it's just supremely uninteresting beer. The mouthfeel is medium in heft and might feel a half notch lighter if the carbonation was more lively. I'm all for subdued levels of C02 (in most styles), but this one needs a few more bubbles to add some perkiness.

I didn't expect much from Starobrno and that's exactly what I got. One never knows when one of these unheralded Czech lager/pils will exceed all expectations and will actually be good. Unfortunately, this isn't one of those times. Pass.

500 mL brown bottle, 5 months until best before date.

Pours a dark straw colour with a creamy white head that disappears fairly quickly.

Aroma is malty with spicy and floral hops.

Big biscuity malt flavour dominates, barely letting the hops through near the end. Hops are spicy and leave a pleasant lingering bitterness. Much sweetness throughout. Carbonation is high, and the mouthfeel is thick and a bit sticky.

Enjoyable, but a bit unbalanced, lacking the hops necessary to cut the sugary flavour.
