Like it says. An alcove. Cool little place to hang. Good beer selection but limited due to space. I've only had tap beers so I'm not sure about bottle selection. Can also get crowded easily. Worth a visit. If you blink you may miss it. Prices are comparable to other local places and they do specials. Seating is limited so standing room only applies to a greater area around the bar. Not sure if they had a unisex bathroom or his and hers. I was overall happy about my selection and the price I payed.

The Alcove is a small craft beer bar on Main Street with great atmosphere and a good rotating selection. The bottle list is pretty expansive for Gainesville, and the six or so rotating draught beers are always quality beers. I had Unibroue Raftman and Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti on tap this weekend, and it's not often I see those in Gainesville. As many have said the place is very small but the service is still good. Prices are reasonable compared to downtown as well. It's a great place to go during the week as well, since it is easier to find a seat and enjoy some good beer.

Many moons ago, I was in the heart of Italy - Bologna or Siena perhaps - and stumbled upon a bar with my wife that had like a gajillion beers on tap (OK, maybe like 30, but at the time, I had never seen anything like it). Things that I had never seen before. Beers I had never even heard of. Each beer was served at a specific temperature and in its own special glass. My mind was BLOWN. This was well in advance of the current trend of microbrews in the USA so it all seemed fresh and unique. I vowed to open a smaller more subdued version of that bar someday. Well, The Alcove is the closest to what I had drummed up in my imagination, and I'm crazy-jealous for not having the balls/start-up-capital to do it first.
The place is quaint - a tiny hole-in-the-wall that is the perfect size. You could be in there drinking alone and feel like you are over at a friend's house. Or it can be packed to the gills with like 20 people and you feel like you are at the jammin-est party in town. The decor is perfect. The music they have playing is perfect. It's totally the right vibe, and they nailed it.
The offerings on tap are generally terrific, with some standby-favorites that always seem to be there, but always constant rotations of something new and fun and interesting and of course delicious. The prices are reasonable for the offerings. My only comment would be to bring in more "unusual" or unique offerings, but I'm not exactly sure how the beer distribution mafia works or whatever, so I'll just say Alcove is doing a bang-up job on what they do.
Bottom line: on the rare, rare, very rare occasions when I have the time, money, energy, and willpower to "go out", I will pretty much hit The Alcove every time.

Thanks to vapodge for bringing me to this neat little spot.
Alcove it is. No bigger than the room I am sitting in now. The atmosphere is cozy even with the metal seating. The bar sits along half the length of the back of the bar. Some nice beers on tap that rotate with local stuff. A bunch of beers in the botttle and at least the Narraganset Porter in the can that I had as well. They have newer stuff as the 'ganset just got down here a week or so ago.
The 'tender didn't really engage us too much in conversation but we didn't really invite it... he was nice enough.
It's pretty chill and if that's your scene, check this place out!

The Alcove is one of my favorite places downtown to enjoy a couple of pints with a friend or two. This is a tiny bar, with room for only about two dozen, but the atmosphere is very inviting. As the evening progresses, usually every seat is full.
I prefer to choose from the beer selections on draught, and there are always several I want to try. Lately, there have been many tasty Colorado brews to choose from, but there's also usually at least one local SwampHead variety available.
The owner and the staff have always been friendly and helpful if I have a question. This establishment is a fine addition to the downtown Gainesville beer scene.

The Alcove is a really cool little bar with a pretty good selection of beers. The bar is aptly named - its quite small, but very nice inside. The walls are lined with local artwork which is always changing. The draft list for the 12 or so draft lines always has a variety of great beers and is always changing. For most drafts you can choose between an 8z and a 16oz pour, which allows you to try a lot of beers without passing out.
The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and they will willingly guide you through the 100+ beers they carry in bottle. On top of the great beers they have, they also carry a few ciders, lambics, meads, and wines as well.
What I like most about Alcove is the atmosphere. The place fills up pretty quickly, but even when its really busy, its got a cozy feel to it. Check it out

This is a new beer bar in Gainesville downtown. It has about 1/4 the size of the menu of the other beer bar in Gainesville but its pretty cool.
This place is tiny. I went here two days before Christmas and it was pretty dead. How small you ask? Maximum capacity 50 people. That's right 50. They are usually hugely crowded.
I sat at the bar and like I said it was dead so the bartender was attentive. I ordered a beer and it came quickly. They try to use the correct glassware when possible. A decent selection of European ales, American microbrews, and various lagers. I'm glad I went but the place is kind of a hipster hangout. Lots of Buddy Holly look-a-likes there, skinny jeans and thick rimmed glasses.
Check it out but its not worth waiting for.

I've been here a few times - I'm always VERY happy to see new places that focus on serving beer that isn't readily available to Gainesville.
The location is downtown just south of University on Main street. It's a small pub and they make the most out of their space. It's well decorated (Industrial/Modern), Clean, Neat and organized. Their taps rotate, they have 6 I Believe. They have their tap list CLEARLY marked as well as their "new" selections in bottles. The bar itself is small, and there are a few tables as well, but it all works well for the atmosphere. The few times I've been it gets packed pretty quick, but the staff work feverishly to make sure everyone is served - they literally don't stop moving ever. I'm also glad to see they pick up Florida Micro's when available, helping support our growing breweries. They kind of remind me of Stubbies before their expansion, and if all continues to go well, Im sure they will as well. The downside is that if you arrive their late, or when they are busy, you likely will be waiting outside until they have room - it gets packed quickly, but I can't fault them for that.
Pro's: Good rotating draft (despite only 6 taps), Extensive bottle selection, Excellent service, Good atmosphere, Pricing is currently much better than competition.
Con's: Fills up quickly, Only 1 bathroom, "Compact" for sure.
Overall Impression: I like the place, it's easygoing and I don't spend a fortune when I go. Great friendly service. I recommend it for sure.
