Pours black with a large tan head. Lots of residual lacing remains. Taste is spice and some roasted malts. Not getting any pumpkin. Bottle served in a tulip n

October 7th, 2016 - New variants on classic pumpkin beers definitely catch my eye, so I had to give "Black Pumpkin" a go, especially with such an alluring and well designed label. No surprises on the appearance - it's a dark brew, with a lighter colored head, but the aroma is much bolder and ready to announce its notes of marshmallow, arrowwheat, root beer and sassafras. I love the blend of sweet and herbal, though I don't find as much of it in the flavor. There a medium body weight offers a lighter pumpkin flavor, bolstered by some of the dark sweet notes, and smoothed by a nitro-like smoothness.

This beer was poured from a can instead of the bottle shown in the picture.
With a near-black ruby color, it tastes really bitter and medicinal with a lot of pine. The toffee in this beer is overpowered by the former flavors, which follows the aftertaste and an aroma that's more medicinal than usual. Overall, I'll take Elysian Brewing's Dark o' the Moon any day in terms of the Pumpkin stout category!

16 ounce can poured into a nonic style pint glass.
L: Clear and dark brown, two finger tan head, foam is fluffy and persistent, leaves lace
S: Weak nose, caramel malt, hint of chocolate
T: Roasty and bitter, pumpkin and nutmeg, dry spicy finish, bitter char aftertaste
F: Medium body, opens crisp then smooths out and becomes creamy, medium-high carbonation
O: Not bad, does a better job than a lot of pumpkin beers I have had of keeping the dry spicy finish in check

It's a good brew. It lacks a few things I think that would push it more to the top. A hint of spices/cinnamon and more of a black look would do it. It's a solid brew and not one to pass up if the choices are dwendling down towards the end of the season.

Poured from a 16oz can. Deep brown with a nice light tan head. Nice lacing present while drinking. Hints of chocolate on the nose. You can taste the Pumpkin spice up front that then takes a backseat to some chocolate and malt notes. The ending is slightly bitter, but overall smooth, solid stout.

Pours a dark nrown color with ruby edges and at least a finger and a hakd of head. The nose has pumpkin spice notes. The flavor profile is a really pleasing mix of mild stout roastiness and pumpkin spice.
I was reluctant to try this offering because of the polarizing views on their standard pumpkin ale. But, I found a single can which made it worth a shot. I'm glad that I tried it as I think it hangs with Warlock.

The beer pours a nice light brown head with a creamy texture. The beer itself is a dark chocolate brown that appears to be black.
The smell is good. It has a nice chocolate in the finish while the pumpkin and cinnamon spice note come upfront. The pumpkin and spice aren't overwhelming and fairly tolerable.
The taste is pretty good. The spice takes a back seat to the chocolate and light bitter hop note mixed with the pumpkin. The finish has a notes of a nice vanilla and spice mix.
The feel is good. It has an interestingly light medium body with a creamy texture.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle. Lots of frothy head on initial pour that faded to around a finger soon after. Smells malty and with a bit of vanilla. Not a strong pumpkin flavor, but good maltiness and a surprising bite of carbonation. Finally a pumpking stout that gives Warlock a run for its money. Definitely a must have for pumpkin-stout fans.

Poured into a pint glass with a fluffy 2ish inch tan-beige head that slowly bubbled down to 1/4-1/2 inch. Looked dark, dark brown-black. Scent is sweet, with pumpkin and cinnamon/clove as primary and anise (black licorice) as a secondary scent. Taste is boozy and has a bit of bitterness to it from the previously mentioned anise. Feel is full bodied and creamy. Enjoyed it, but would have been more enjoyable if smell and taste lined up for me.
