Only slightly different looking than every other orangey beer. I expected something a bit darker and richer looking. This is just a stock clear pale orange with a white head, maybe a finger thick, with only average retention.

The smell is an improvement in that you get both the normal pumpkin pie spice scents as well as that of real pumpkin.

It's not real good. While the spices and pumpkin fruit come through in the nose, they're barely found on the tongue. There were spices, but it's a half-hearted attempt and falls flat. Tastes like a bad combination of a pilsner and a pale ale.

Should be smooth and spicy, it's not. Feels like a bad pilsner. Not exactly a dry finish, not a wet finish, just a finish that leaves you wondering what you just drank.

Poor. And I've got 5 more to drink. It would score better if they didn't call it a pumpkin ale because it leaves you wanting something better. In the grand scheme of beer, it's merely average and better than an American macro any day, it's not a very good pumpkin ale. (1,030 characters)

Poured into a stein.

A: Pumpkin/copper-colored body with minimal head.

S: Lots of pumpkin spice, with a bit of vinegar.

T: Disappointing. Much less spice flavor than there is in the nose. Just not a whole lot there in general.

M: Thin and inoffensive.

O: Meh. (264 characters)

Appearance: Burnt orange. Minimal off-white head. Higher than anticipated carbonation. Retention is low and leaves a bubbly, ultra-thin collar. Perfectly clear.

Smell: Massively sweet. Brown sugar, pumpkin pie spices, and a tiny bit of real pumpkin playing in the background. Aggressively spicy and sweet. Sugar. Some pale roasted malts. Lightly cooked malts. Doughy.

Taste: Pretty much the nose with a high carbonation. Big upfront sweetness followed by a bug hit of brown sugar and nutmeg. Some cinnamon and vanilla as well. No aftertaste. Some minor citrus notes. Blast of flavor and then nothing. Cooked malts. Some dough. Malty and sweet.

Mouthfeel: Bubbly. Carbonation is aggressively high. Very clean. Higher side of light for the body.

Overall: Eh, and that's being generous. Big blast of spice followed by nothing. It's like pumpkin soda, which is good if that's what you're looking for. (900 characters)

The color when poured into a pint glass was a sort of yellow/orange with very little foam and very little lace on the side of the glass. The smell of spice was evident in the aroma. Not a lot of pumpkin flavor, but some bitter spices in the finish. Not what I expected for a Pumpkin Ale. Just to bitter and not alot of spicey pumpkin flavor. (341 characters)

12oz bottle poured to a pint glass while home brewing pumpkin spice porter.

A. Looks great. Orange pumpkin color, head quickly vanished. Leaves virtually no lacing.

S. Boring and dull. Light hints of pumpkin, cloves, and other spices.

T/MF. Light, light hint of pumpkin, little spice left in mouth. Watery, with decent carbonation.

O. Very light and watery. Nothing I would drink again. No, I would not recommend this beer to a friend. (441 characters)

Appearance - Pours a slightly burnt orange color with a finger width head, poor retention, and a lacing that's quite sparse.

Smell - Incredibly faint - hints of hints of pumpkin... and that's it.

Taste - Watery... scant hints of pumpkin, and a modicum of cinnamon spice... if even that.

Mouthfeel - Watery. Somewhat carbonated.

Overall - Good Lord! I thought this was the beer I had last year that had this incredible pumpkin flavor... but this tastes like diluted pumpkin water. This can't possibly be the same beer, can it?!? (533 characters)

Poured into a Black Raven imperial pint Pours a slightly hazy medium orange amber. Thin head that fizzes out instantaneously (but made an interesting sound as it did so). No head, lacing or carbonation. Light aroma of sweet malt and pumpkin pie spices. Taste is dry pumpkin, with a distinct earthy note that had a hint of moldiness. Finishes with a slightly sour, dry flavor. Light bodied. Not that good. (404 characters)

Bottle from Wing Central in U district into a pint glass. Aroma was of mild pumpkin, yeast, cinnamon and sugar. Appearance was very bubbly. Very dark orange, fizzy, and head leaves quick. Almost glassy. Lots of bubbles stick to the side of the glass. It’s more like a pumpkin soda than an ale. Taste was bland pumpkins. Sweet and not a really big profile. Too much carbonation with the sting to go with it. Palate was soda-like. Sticky and strong carbonation is all I can say. Overall, if you are looking for a good pumpkin beer, keep clear. I’ve spoiled myself having had Pumpking and Great Pumpkin as some of my first pumpkin beers. I really appreciate the style of beer. Having said that, this is not a quality pumpkin beer. I can appreciate it, but it’s for sure not a beer drinkers beer. Alcoholic pumpkin soda (821 characters)

Pours a cloudy, off-orange color. Fizzy head dissipates almost immediately. No lacing.

Smells like pumpkin pie. Some spicy cinnamon and nutmeg.

Sweet, fizzy, pumpkin taste. The taste is a lot weaker than I expected, given the smell. There are some holiday spice notes, and a hint of sour apple in the finish.

Mouthfeel is fizzy, lots of carbonation, and a warm finish. A syrup feeling lingers.

I’m not fond of this beer. (427 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a schooner. No best before on the bottle.

A - pours a very unremarkable amber, and after about 2 minutes there is no hint of any head or lacing. A few small carbonation bubbles are rising in the glass, but it's pretty sedate.

S - nose isn't as expected with a bit of cinnamon and candy rather than pumpkin.

T- on tasting it's definitely interesting, with a light hops bite and very quick (and dilute) resolution with just a hint of malt. Behind everything is just a hint of spicy pumpkin. It's not unpleasant, but it's very subtle.

M - mouthfeel is unremarkable with a light to medium body backed by some sharp carbonation.

O - overall this is really drinkable, thought exceptionally unremarkable. In a sense, it is less than the sum of its parts, with just a hint of spicy pumpkin holding it up. Ultimately it's a bit dilute and subtle versus a lot of more direct pumpkin beers out there. (921 characters)

A: Pours nearly no head that went away in an instant. Straw colored.

S: Spice right off the bat. Nutmeg more than any other pumpkin spice although all the others are present. Ginger in the background.

T: The taste is a lot more subtle than the aroma would make you think. Much more drinkable.

M: Slightly dry with good body.

O: Really just ok. Better spiced pumpkin beer in terms of flavor. Aroma is too much though. (421 characters)

Review taken from notes.

This beer pours a clear orange amber color. It has about a finger of loose sudsy head resting on top. The head disappears almost as fast as it came, leaving no lace behind as it falls. The nose is pretty faint. I am getting some pumpkin sweetness and some light fall spice aromas. The taste follows the nose pretty well. It starts off malty and there is some pumpkin and and fall spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. There is also just a touch of hops, and there is some lingering sweetness in the finish. This is on the light side of medium and it's carbonation is pretty high. It is very tingly, but has a pretty smooth feel to it. This has okay drinkability. It goes down pretty easy and the flavor is okay. It has the pumpkin and spice that most other pumpkin ales have, but they are pretty watered down. Overall this is an alright pumpkin ale. It is worth a shot, but I won't be buying it again. (933 characters)

Orange in color. Head was fizzy and dissapeared quickly. Aroma smelled ofsweet pumpkin puree. Upon first SIP, it was sweet up front but its body dissapeared. The malt is almost non existent. Ended up tasting like soda. Mothfeel was fuzzy and soda-like. Drain pour. (264 characters)

A: Pours a clody dark orange color with a white fizzy head.

S: Pretty weak. I am getting a tiny bit of spices and maybe some malt.

T: The beer has some pumpkin, some malt and a little bit of spices.

M: The beer almost drinks like water. Goes down easy and just feels like a water down beer.

O: This is far from the best pumpkin beer I have had. It is weak and just lacks a lot of flavor. Def wont buy again. (411 characters)

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, orange-brown in color, clear, high carbonation

Smell: nutmeg, toasted malt, cinnamon, and pumpkin spice

Taste: cinnamon, clove, followed by pale malt that leads to pumpkin spiciness at the end.

Mouthfeel: sweet but not overly so, high carbonation, medium-light bodied

Drinkability: A nice and solid pumpkin ale. Not boundary pushing, yet more complex then several i have had this year. I would get a six of this. (488 characters)

[Best served in a Lager glass]

The pour was a cloudy medium orange with a brownish hue and had an average sized (1-2 finger) white fizzy head that was gone in a matter of seconds and had virtually no lacing to speak of.

The aroma was light to say the least of a light bread malt and a mild doughy yeast with hints of nutmeg, pumpkin and a little allspice.

It tasted extremely lightly sweet with a small presence of nutmeg and cinnamon at first then had a mild touch of pumpkin show up and became a little acetic (vinegary) at the end with the flavor only sticking around for a very short while.

Mouthfeel was very light in body and watery in texture with a fizzy carbonation.

Overall a Pumpkin Ale that was super light in flavor, even so you could taste the pumpkin and spices. But it did have a mild vinegar presence at the finish which was unusual for this type of beer. I was also surprised to see it come in a twist off bottle. (936 characters)

From tasting notes 10-19-11
Poured into a warbled mug

Appearance: Slight chill haze with an orange-amber pour. There is a tall and super bubbly/foamy ivory head that settles very quickly and has absolutely no head retention and leaves no lace behind.

Smell: This beer has a sharp almost astringent smell, and a lot of nice nutmeg and clove aromas--powerful, but not much pumpkin smell there.

Taste: The taste is primarily nutmeg and clove, and there is not much in the way of pumpkin or malt flavors contributing. It's a bit bland. It is a nice tasting beer, but too spicey and one dimensional.

Mouthfeel: Very light bodied, with lots of carbonation and bitingly so. The finish is crisp and springy.

Overall: Good tasting, but lacks complexity and balance. (765 characters)

12oz beer poured into a pint glass. No stamped date.

Appearance - One finger barely offwhite head. Hazy light orange body.

Smell - Strong pumpkin spice. Cinnamon. Brown sugar. Eggnog... wrong holiday, but hey, the nose doesn't lie.

Taste - Pumpkin. Mild malts. Slight spiciness.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, inoffensive. Neither challenging nor boring.

Overall Drinkability - I think this beer is great at what it does. Not my style, but I can totally appreciate it. It's soft, mild, balanced, flavorful, and inoffensive. Great novelty beer. (537 characters)

Reviewed last month, Bruges glass, unknown freshness
Pour-Medium orange brown, slightly cloudy, tiny head that won’t even be provoked to be more than barely a film, fades to a thin rim of bubbles in seconds. Light stream of effervescence

Nose-Mostly malty yeast with a natural pumpkin smell, a little bit of cinnamon and clove I’m thinking.

Palate-A little bit sweet at first, a decent amount of sour that doesn’t last long, little bitter. There is some cinnamon and clove that comes through, also a noticeable amount of pumpkin that tastes slightly earthy. It has a little bit of a soda-like taste maybe from being over-filtered, but is not too bad. The spice is first, then the pumpkin and it hangs on for a little bit but that is basically it. Barely any yeast or bitterness

Body-Medium weight and fizzy. Not much interesting here just fairly easy drinking. I like it. I see this as more of a pumpkin I want to drink when it’s actually cold due to the spice. I like it, although the pumpkin and spice is fairly dominant over the actual beer flavors. Would get it again, though nothing great (1,104 characters)

Bottle (2011)

Ralph's
San Marcos, CA

Clear orange and light copper color with a quickly forming, and quickly receding off-white head. Leaves the glass as clean as can be--no lacing.

Decent but very mild aroma of some simple Fall spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.

This tastes like flavorless tonic water, until the end when there's just a hint of cinnamon and allspice character. This is one of the most flavorless beers I've had in a very long time. I don't get any actual pumpkin flavor at all.

Thin body and high, tonic-water style carbonation. Prickly and not very drinkable.

This is one of the poorer pumpkin ales I've tried. (643 characters)

A - Pours cloudy orange with a three finger head that dissipates nearly instantly. Extremely fizzy at first, had to pour all along the side so it wouldn't overflow. No lacing at all.

S - Sweet brown sugar and pumpkin. Clove and nutmeg mingle with other spice aromas.

T - Slightly sweet with full pumpkin and cloves. Strange sourness in the background that lingers in the aftertaste as well.

M - Medium body, but too much carbonation.

O - Not impressed overall with this one, the flavors seem just a tad off, while it feels like a soda instead of a beer in your mouth. Certainly much better alternatives in the pumpkin ale department. (638 characters)

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, dark copper-like color with a half-inch thick head that dissipates instantly. Has a nice lacing..

Smell - I smell a lot of spices, like clove and nutmeg. Along with pumpkin.

Taste - Pretty spicy.. the clove is definitely a strong flavor in this. The pumpkin as well. Maybe a little bit of cinnamon. Kinda sweet too.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodies with medium carbonation.

Overall - This beer is definitely something out of the ordinary. (464 characters)
