Not the best I have had from this family brewer. Had 3 weeks past expiry. Grainy, light, some malts. Was good antidote to spicy food, almost metallic and medium-thin mouthfeel before. Drinkable, flowery smell and in taste, grassy, clean. Thanks, Georgina.

Picked up a .5L swingtop from EuroMarket in Astoria. It poured a tall white head that left a little lacing and had a sweet bready aroma with a hint of cider. The malts are bland in the flavor, but there is a very pleasant, smooth spicy hop bitterness that quickly takes over and drowns out the sugary malt. It's drinkable, but I'd like a more barley-like taste before those lovely hops roll in. Maybe the bottle's old or been abused, but there's no dating or dust of the bottle, so I'll assume the best. Not a bad beer, but I'd certainly prefer a Pilsner Urquell.

Firstly, I was expecting a pilsner when I bought this half liter swing-top, mostly because it says Original Czech Lager... but this reminds me of a Munich Helles or something with more full malt characteristics.

Pours a hazy golden honey-like color with soap-water head. Smells like sweet malt, a little caramely.

Sweet malty taste with some sourness and plenty of spicy hop bitterness on the finish

Feels spicy and sharp on the tongue but fine carbonation. Good drinkability overall, but not as good as a Pilsner in my opinion due to the heavier malt character which slows me down... err, makes me want to slow down faster?

Poured from a green 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a small head. Smell is grainy and skunky. Taste is crisp, malts up front and finishing bitter. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall I would consider this a decent brew.

Venturing a guess that this is the beer I just had. 12 oz. green bottle, "Bernard" 4.7% Czech Pils. On special for $2.50 at Underbar.

Poured into a tiny juice glass, in homage to my favorite haunt, Johnnie's Lounge. Golden body, tiny carbonation streams. A flaccid skim of foam that barely covers the surface. Dull grain and sweet corn aroma. Sweet taste of corn and mushy, overcooked vegetable and grain water. Body is fuller than the average lager, not crisp, pretty wet and slick feeling. Carbonation does nothing to clean the palate, instead the vegetal corniness hangs around, tasting unpleasant. One and done, won't be trying this again.

12 oz bottle without a freshness date. Pours a mostly clear, dark gold color with a thin, bubbly white head. Retention is poor and does not give much of a chance for lacing.

Nose is pleasantly grainy with a light touch of floral hops. Not much though, I could certainly use some more cones here.

Taste is not bad, lacks some saaz hop flavoring, but has a nice, leafy bitterness on the finish that grabs on well. Grains are honeyed with a little bit of toast, which explains the darker color of this pilsner. A little undercarbonated and not as crisp as I would like, but on the other hand it has a full body and plenty of flavor. This is a pretty tasty, albeit not very classical, take on the style. Worth a purchase if you know you are getting it fresh.

After a week in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, this takes first prize for best beer sampled. The bottle is standard Czech brown half-liter with a tapered neck. The label is blue, white and gold, with a coat of arms and a few awards. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 8/21/04, I opened it on 8/7/04. This family brewery now belongs to Staropramen, according to several locals I spoke to.

Pours an orange-tinged clear gold under a one finger white head with minimal body but good retention. A few spots of lace grace the side of the glass. Lots of Czech hops great the nose, with a touch of metal amongst the flowers and a bit of malt for balance. The mouth is very prickly and fairly thick. The opening features sweet malt graininess, accompanied by an ever present crisp hoppy bitterness, which is smooth rather than biting, but the bitterness is ubiquitous, lingering long after the finish. Definitely a good quaff.

Appearance: Attractive clear deep golden color with a modest white head, slight carbonation, and scattered broken lace.

Aroma: Rich pale malt aroma, very much like fresh bread, with a pleasant noble hop presence, and a slight mineral quality.

Taste: Slightly toasty pale malt, strong noble hops, and a slight paper note near the finish. The hops close out the taste with a slightly spicy, pepper note.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft and pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: A quite decent Pilsener, perhaps a bit excessively hopped, but nonetheless, quite good.

Presentation: Packaged in a 16.9 ounce brown glass bottle with a flip top stopper, served in a Pilsener glass. Thank goodness the brewer used a brown glass bottle, thus avoiding the typical lager skunk aroma.

500 ml green bottle, as Bernard Lager, now available in Norway at REMA 1000 stores. ABV is 4.5%. Golden colour, moderate white head of poor retention . Fairly nice aroma of Zatec (Saaz) hops, notes of grass, hints of honey. The flavour is fairly malty for a pilsener, and the hops are slightly better than average. Moderately bitter aftertaste.

I picked up a bottle of this at Thirsty's in York, PA. Poured cold into a lager mug.
A - Light amber lager the shade of apple cider, maybe a tad lighter, with a thin whit 1/4 inch of head.

S - Yeasty w/ a trademark Czech aroma - light skunkiness gentle hop odor.

M - An average extra fizzy effervescence at first w/ a slightly bitter hop tinge and clean finish w/ a malty tinge.

T - A fresh malt fullness with an herbal sweet hop that has a grassy ting that makes the malt seem lightly dry, yet smooth w/ a gentle creamy aspect. Very mild yet full tasting w/ similarities to a Helles as others mentioned. Nice hop flavor w/ a noble hop character and greal malt.

D - A very tasty lager w/ character that most aren't capable of reproducing. Malty w/ an herbal hoppiness. Very quaffable w/ session strength went well w/ my six cheese pizza
