500ml swing-top bottle. Been a while since I've had a beer from the CR, the country that helped me cut my beer teeth way back in the mid-90s.

This beer pours a clear, very dark ruddy brown hue, with sharp cherry cola highlights, and two hefty fingers of puffy, loosely foamy beige head, which leaves some decent sudsy rock arch lace around the glass as things sink away.

It smells of roasted caramel malt, faint bittersweet powdered cocoa, red wine touched dark muddled fruit, a subtle grainy sourness, and earthy, subdued leafy hops. The taste is more toasted, bready caramel malt, gritty baker's chocolate, sour milk and grain notes, a free-radical earthiness, and some lager-friendly leafy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is fairly restrained, or just inert at times, after that somewhat unexpected initial outburst, the body a bare medium weight, and generally quite smooth, hints of both clamminess and smoothness providing the mindfuck of the day. It finishes a bit off-dry, the roasted character of the malt still most prevalent, abetted by the lingering cocoa, all against the remnants of the weak hops that were.

A pleasant enough dark Euro lager, nicely toasted, and complex by the same sword. Perhaps I'd get a bit tired of the increasingly pithy mouthfeel, but if I recall correctly, switching between this style and the local Pils easily obviated that minor quibble, at least when drinking in Prague.

bought on a whim and glad.

poured a deep black body with tan head

nice roasted flavours with a slight but not unpleasant sweetness coming through.

not much aroma but the roast is there.

nice carbonation was expecting a heavy fizz from a 'lager' but instead was greeted by a good mouthfeel

must try more :D

When you consider this is a lager type beer than you will be very surpriced by the taste. Intence smell and taste of caramel and a little coffee. Full body taste. There are visible yeasts inside the bottle but the yeasty taste was not recognized. Crispy beer which I love to drink together with a steak from urugay ;) The pop top bottle is very nice. The brery dont pasteurize the beer! On of the best dark lagers wven recognized on World Beer Awards.

A: Excellent color for its type ! A true black beer with a big head that leaves a layer of mixed bubbles on top of the beer, light almost not pass

S: Even you can feel toasted barley a little more of intensity was expected, also can be sensed some caramel or melted sugar inside.

T: Same as with smell, something else was expected, something more complex something more for a schwarzbier, yes it is toasted and it has some sweetness.

M: Mouthfeel is good, it has a lot of thing going on, first sweetness that change for a little hops bitterness but then bittersweet and of course refreshing.

Jesus. What the hell's up with this brewery? Last beer I had exploded carbon dioxide in my face, this one, I undo the fastening on the swingtop cap and the cap explodes with a violent pop that leaves my ears ringing and almost lifts the entire bottle off the table. I don't really need a heart attack with my beer.

Pours a deep brown in its stream, in the glass it looks very dark, although when held to light it does show a very deep red-black shining through. Head is frothy, but large bubbled, settling pretty quickly to a film of beige-brown. Lacing is good. Looks pretty decent.

Ooh, nose is very pleasant. Mix of dark fruit, light vinous acidity and a faint whisky-malt smokiness. Really pleasantly mixed together. Way better than I expected for effectively a generic Dark Euro Lager. Sweetness is very pleasant, and the malty, peaty note is very welcome. Really lovely.

Taste is also nice, with a good blend of sweetness, roasted malts and light earthy characters to round out the palate. Light crispness on the back brings it back to its lager roots, but this has a good deal of complexity despite this. Very pleasant.

Great dark Euro lager. Very smooth, but with a pleasant lightness on the palate that leavens the complexity. Drinkable but interesting - it's a great mix.

Black color with a thick caramel head with good retention and leaving laces.
Aroma of crude malt and hints of caramel and chocolate.
Flavor of toasted malts and earthy and grassy hops. Notes of burnt wood and caramels. Dry aftertaste with a lingering roasted note.
Light to medium body with appropriate carbonation.
Pleasant Schwarzbier, not overly sweet and flavorful. Improves as temperature rises, though not really complex which is part of the style.
