650ml bottle, a heretofore unknown Canadian brewery to me, and a bit of a surprise on the beer store shelves this week. The name is a cross between dandelion and lemongrass, both guest ingredients here.

This beer pours a clear, medium golden yellow hue, with three fingers of puffy, thinly foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some splattered pockmarked lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of rather doughy pale and caramel malt, somewhat neutered lemongrass, a vegetal, almost floral weediness, and pretty obfuscated earthy, leafy hops. The taste is mostly right in the same line - bready, doughy caramel malt, a more zippy lemongrass bitterness, fresh, floral weeds, a soft stoney flintiness, and musty, earthy hops.

The carbonation is alive and kicking, but gentle enough to not leave a bruise, the body on the light side of medium weight, and a little astringent in its workaday smoothness, which soon turns out to be no biggie. It finishes on the sweet side, that doughy malt hanging tough, with some equally tenacious bitter, musty weediness - just like the real thing!

Tasty and well-made, Lion Grass seems to have a fairly enjoyable blonde ale for a base, and a judicious application of the dandelion and lemongrass adjuncts, which lends itself to thoughts of kicking back on the patio in nigh summer months, after pulling some of their friends out of the ground, with an ironic tilt of a glass of this.

I'm a big fan of Highlander's Scottish ale. They have another off-centre brew (Twisted Spruce) that's alright and I think I'd place this brew just below that. Found it on tap...looked it up and was very interested to see a beer flavoured with dandelions and lemongrass. However, in my humble opinion, the flavour of those ingredients doesn't shine through. I agree with the previous review that there's a doughy malty taste and nose. Sweet on the palate too with a strained herbal finish. If the finish is brought on by the unique ingredients, it's not enough for me to differentiate from some mild hop flavour. My palate has been adjusted to strong IPAs though so maybe I'm desensitized to the subtle flavours...or I have no taste :)

Nothing special but nothing offensive either.
