With its ten-gallon brewing capacity, The One Horse Tavern may well be Oregon's most micro brewery. For the time being, there is no physical brewery to speak of. Brew day means putting the kettle on the kitchen stove and doing it homebrew style.

Even the name One Horse deliberately suggests its smallness, as does the humble town of Gaston (pop. 620). Built in the 1920s as a bank, the One Horse served most of its life as a dive bar before Vince and Wendy Taggert stepped in to bring new life to an old bar. Vince brought his homebrewing skills and years of bartending experience at such Portland landmark bars as Satyricon and the Rialto. Wendy earns credit for the glass mosaic windows that lend an immediate splash of color and artistry.

An old western rustic feel pervades. The bar sits across from a lumberyard and feedstore, beyond which lies a farm in an early stage of wetlands restoration. Three taps serve house beers from a compact Frigidaire kegerator. One tap at the bar features Ninkasi, three others pour macros. Despite being a brewpub at the periphery of Oregon's wine country, the One Horse serves more mixed drinks than anything.

Beer quality is insufficient to earn an endorsement at this time. Though the bottled coffee porter succeeds admirably, other ales showed troubling inconsistencies. However, the comforting charm and hearty burgers are inviting. And the adjacent courtyard with its fire pit and rough-hewn Hawai'ian hardwoods is a soothing enclave in which to sip that porter. Visit for the vibe, not for the beer.
