Finally made it up to this place with my brother-in-law, after many years of being ignorant of its existence while living 20 minutes away.

A - Arriving in the town (hamlet?) of Ilderton I was greeted by umpteen Union Jacks - apparently they were celebrating the Queen's jubilee. The bar and restaurant has a small-town vibe, with one very young man seeming to operate the entire establishment. Nice wooden interior, with some small TVs and a roll-up 100" projection screen for sports aficionados, as well as video trivia, Blackjack, etc.

Q - I ordered a cask ale off the hand-pump and it was appropriately warm and low in carbonation. I'd recommend switching to Imperial pints if you're going for the whole English vibe though.

Sr - The barkeep was attentive, refilled our waters regularly, and accommodated our request to see the projection screen. He seemed genuinely knowledgeable about the beers on-tap.

Se - Tap selection is small but reasonably diverse. Seeing as this is Ontario, there wasn't much in the way of 'big beers'. That said, all the standard UK bases were covered and a few Ontario session beers filled out the rest.

F - I had sweet potato fries, which were solid and came with a nice dipping sauce. I appreciate the availability of two types of vinegar as well. The menu boasted 50+ types of wings, which my brother-in-law plans to explore in the future. The rest of the menu looked like your typical English pub fare, and had sufficient vegetarian options for me to return for a meal.

I could have gone for a bit more selection in terms of draft handles, but this seems liked a nice local pub where you can socialize and pass the time. If I lived somewhere as small as Ilderton I'd be very proud to call The King Edward my local watering hole.

Cask ale and great pub food are what you can expect at The King Edward. A quaint little restaurant located in downtown Ilderton, 7 minutes north of London.

Atmosphere is British pub with five booths, numerous tables, and two large group sections in the back of the restaurant. Huge big screen TV beside a small bar of about 10 seats. There's a side room for those who want to chat away from the hustle and bustle. The chalk board informs patrons of the latest cask and tap offerings, as well as food specials.

Affable, competent service with fairly knowledgeable staff. Drinks and food come to the table promptly.

Beer selection is tiny but emphasizes quality. As of November '09, Fuller's Red Fox was on cask, while Wellington Special Pale Ale, Fuller's London Pride, Big Rock Grasshopper Wheat, and Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest Lager were on tap. The real ale and draught beers constantly rotate so there's always something different each week. For instance, over the last few months they've had Stone Hammer Dark, Railway City Honey Brown, and Fuller's ESB on tap, plus MacLean's Pale Ale, Grand River Ploughman's Ale & Mill Race Mild, and Fuller's Bengal Lancer & Jack Frost on the hand pump.

The food is a treat here. My girlfriend and I tried the "Bourbon Street" wings glazed in Jack Daniel's and cajun sauce - they were unreal! The Steak & Guinness pie was delicious and my girl enjoyed her greek salad (a surprise at an English pub). Looks like they make their own dressing. Overall, things are on the pricey side but this is a go-to spot in the London area. Awesome cask & tap offerings and a welcoming atmosphere.

Located about a ten minute drive northwest of London, Ontario, the King Edward is a gem in the rough. The only place between Hamilton and Windsor to get cask, hand pulled beer. Stonehammer Dark, Wellington Arkell, Macleans Pale Ale are just a few of the beers that have been on Cask. Rich (the owner, operator) is a beer enthusiast and likes to keep the real as fresh as possible, and he has also ensured his staff are well versed in beer knowledge, and traet the beer with respect. Other ontario misros included Steamwhistle and Millstreet products. Good UK style ambiance and food, quick service, good ownership. Keep up the good work Rich and staff!
