It's a very smooth bourbon stout, clean and a little thick. There's sweet cocoa and vanilla and a little roast. It's a tasty stout but at 10%, it isn't as bold as the best in this style.

Poured from a 16oz, twist-off cap can (no freshness date) into an oversized snifter...I love that packaging format!
A - Pours pitch black. A conservative pour elicits nothing more than a lacing of a head that is khaki in color. (4.25)
S - Spirit and Oak are dominant followed by chocolate, marshmellow and a whiff of some roasted malt. The alcohol is completely hidden. (4.0)
T - A huge slap of smoky/charred quality is then met with a bit of sweet bourbon before finishing dry and tannic. (3.25)
M - Quite thin for an Imperial Stout. Drinks more like a barrel-aged Porter. (3.0)
O - A higher grade would have been awarded if this was labeled as a BBA Imperial Porter due to its thin body (a Russian Imperial Stout it is not). However, what you do get in return is a dominant wood character which supersedes the spirit and base beer altogether. This was my second beer from Sun King and my preference goes to their BBA Tripel, Lonesome Dove. (3.5)

There is definitely a fair amount of smokiness to this beer; it is not overwhelming or immediately perceptible as such, but the caramel and vanilla flavors from the bourbon-barrel aging are somewhat overshadowed by the bitterness from the smoke that makes for a relatively dry finish.

Dark tan head that didn't hang out, deep brown charcoal color. Get the bourbon off the nose and charred Carmel/chocolates on a roasty platter. Very sticky on the lips. Mouhfeel is what I like most about this one. Not even noticing the 10%.

Black pour, just a rim of khaki, brown head. Aroma- chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, cherries. Smells fantastic! Could smell this all day. Taste- bourbon up front. This was aged either a long time or on some wood still soaked in bourbon. Vanilla, bit of chocolate. Again a lingering bourbon, alcohol taste that is pretty nice to have hanging around. Also a bit of dark chocolate. Mouthfeel has maybe a touch too much carbonation. Overall, pretty big fan of sun King, (full disclosure) and love their barrel program. I think I would prefer their doppelbock and wee heavy over this in a barrel. Maybe a side by side is due in the future NYD.
Did in fact complete a side by side of the 2016 vs the 2017. Hands down the 2016 was better. There is truly nothing interesting going on with the 2017. As a result the rating will be effected. Definite drop in quality of taste in this beer.
