On-tap at Deano's Vino. Served in a Pint glass. Reviewed with tenacity as two drunk chicks kept bothering me while I was taking notes.
A: Finger of solid marshmallow head which fades slowly. Nice orange sheen that's semi-transparent. Lacing is fairly good.
S: Strong citrus notes. Orange, pineapple and grapefruit. There's also some slight breadiness from the grains.
T: Juicy, citrus blasting hops. Just like from the smell, there's plenty of orange, pineapple and grapefruit up front. A decent amount of sweetness and a slight kick from the rye. Finish is very nice and crisp, with only a little bit of bitterness. I also detected a small amount of alcohol.
M: Medium bodied. Rye imparts a nice smoothness. Carbonation is spot on for the style.
D: For a DIPA, this drinkability is very high. The ABV is very well hidden and you could easily knock back 2-3 of these.
Sun King delivers a great, well balanced West Coast style DIPA with First Waltz. The rye works very well with the hops, and isn't too heavy or dominating like some other malts. I've had this a few times (even once from a firkin) and look forward to enjoying this beer again and again.
