64 oz brewery filled growler into a tulip glass.

Pours black, with a finger of dark mocha colored head. This maintains a tight and creamy ½ finger of foam, which whips up a rich cascade that slowly drips down the sides of the glass yet doesn’t actually leave a whole of lace sticking back. The aroma smells of smoky roast, cocoa, and ripe citrus, while spicy alcohol sweetness and warmth spreads out across the back of the nose.

The taste is bittersweet chocolate, burnt coffee, some rather strong citric hops, and a pronounced splash of alcohol on the tail end here that finishes this with sweet warmth and a dry lingering spiciness. Charred smokiness lingers on the breath after each sip. The mouthfeel is full bodied, with a prickly yet also chewy creaminess that spreads out into the mouth. This is definitely sharp feeling up front. Maybe a little too much, as it helps draw out extra strength from the hops and alcohol. Speaking of which, any heat from that big 10% ABV is pretty well hid here but the alcohol flavors from it have boldness to them that comes on a little too strong at times.

I liked the mix of aggressive Stout flavors here but this overall seemed to need a bit more finesse to really pull things together into a nicely drinkable package. Right now, the hops, roast, and alcohol are just too assertive and my palate was pretty much worn out from it after 2 glasses from the growler. If you don’t mind a bit of a fierce punch to your Imperial Stouts, this is worth checking out. I was just looking for more of a well rounded package from this.

I was lucky enough to try this beer at the Black Sparrow in West Lafayette some twenty minutes after they tapped the keg. It appeared a black with dark brown highlights (if possible) with a one finger, creamy looking dark khaki head. It smelled of dark, bitter chocolate coffee with cream. It tasted of sweet dark chocolate with light bitterness. It features a mild and soft roast and dark malt. It is velvety smooth on the palate and coats the mouth. It has the creamiest of mouthfeels. This was a pretty tasty beer but in the middle of my first pint I started to really notice how sweet it was. It got sweeter and was cloyingly sweet. I was given a second pint and couldn't even finish it. It's a solid beer, just too sweet for me.

Shared with some good friends. Thanks Patchmaster for a great Sun King treat. Poured from a growler into snifter.

A- Pours nice thick black in color. Brown head floats on top and drops down to a nice thin cap throughout beer. Sticky lacing grips the glass nicely.

S- Nice oak smell. Dark fruits come through nicely. Sweet smell of vanilla hints creep in at the end.

T- Very smooth, flavorful beer. A little sweet at first. Bitterness finishes this drink nicely. Nothing to overpowering. Nice earthy, oak taste in the middle. Flavors are very well balanced. Higher abv is masked very well.

M- Full body with good carbonation. A little dry in the mouth.

D- Sun King continues to impress me with all their beers. Every new style they produce is excellent! I could drink a couple glasses of these easily. Very solid and can't wait to see what this taste like in a PVW barrel!!

grabbed at the brewery a couple weeks ago.

poured cold and pitch black from the growler to a founder's brewing snifter with a big frothy two finger dark mocha head with nice retention a full coverage lace to the rim of the glass.

aroma of oak, sweet, ripe dark fruit, chocolate and a hint of espresso roast in the wayback.

wow - huge, and unexpected given the aroma, coffee and nice mellow vanilla in the first cold sips. brown sugars, and maybe a bit of burnt dark toffee.

smooth and super creamy, great-big bodied, minimal carbonation, sweet on the tongue followed by a very mellow bitter after.

drinkable - hmmm... maybe a couple pints or three if you're sitting still by the fire.

big thumbs up on this one.
