This is a damn good maibock. Deep burgundy color with a half inch tan head creamy and full of retention.

Fresh baked bread, toffee, caramel, earthy hops, a slight roasty ester with datey quality.

Creamy, thick and delicious with a long slightly sweet finish. Malty dominance and righfully so. Full of caramel and toffee aromas, very bready and juicy in the middle. Earthy hop balances the sweetness of the malt on the finish and keeps it from cloying. Date and maple flavors. Delicious!

Poured from tap at Tomlinson Tap Room.

A: Golden amber in color slightly hazy. Low to medium lacing and fingers. Low head creamy in color and leaves just s slight head.

S: Caramel, spicy very pleasant to smell. Strong malt characteristics with subtle hop aroma. Alcoholic hints but not overbearing or offensive.

T: Very flavorful when it hits the mouth. A tad spicy in the beginning. Giving way to more sweet flavors. It finishes crisp.

M: Good carbonation on this. Not taking away from the flavors. Medium bodied in the mouth.

O: A darn good maibock. Glad I was able to try it.

On tap at the Black Sparrow. It was served in in full pints, and it sure as heck didn't taste like it was 8.3%. But--wow--I just checked their website and it says this is actually 8.5%.

The strength is astounding, because this is one of the easiest-drinking, spritely, and zippy bocks I've ever come across. A good maibock, I always felt, should contain some little burst--a sweetness, a fruitiness, something--that signifies springtime. Then that burst needs to be backed up by regular bockiness: a malt that's a blend between regularly biscuity and then lightly sweet or sour. This does that, and it does that perfectly--you know you're still drinking beer, but it's as smooth, refreshing, and invigorating as a tasty soda pop.

So then how the hell does a beer like that manage to have so much alcohol packed into it? Part of it has to be Sun King's spectacular yeastmanship, which allows them to cover up any back-end burniness with complexities of toffee and breadough. When combined with the zippy bockmalt and light spritely fruitiness of the rest of the beer, the flavor is intoxicating. And so's the high ABV, so be careful.
