Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

We are a family-owned microbrewery founded in 2009 to brew small-batch artisan beers made with the best local ingredients we can find. Located in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, we turn wine into beer, dream into Haiku, yodel in Esperanto and drink more Underberg than the Brouwer's Matts. To celebrate the 7th Anniversary of the Iconic Fremont Beer Haven, Brouwer's, we brewed this monster English Barleywine with floor-malted Maris Otter barley and Noble hops. Half was aged in bourbon barrels for 6 months, blended back together, bottled, and then we waited... and waited... for 16 months... through both the 7th and 8th Anniversaries. Now it is ready. Of course, please age this beer, but do try it today, and keep in mind, Brouwer's is not your typical beer mecca and this is not your typical American Barleywine.

Thin straw colored foamy head rises slow and has nice retention. Brew is dark, deep, roasty, brown, with heavy purple. Lacing is decent, not the best. Decent legs. Nice clarity.

Tons of maple, brown sugar, faded pine, lots of vanilla, bourbon too.

Amazingly sweet and delicious. Barrel and booze are so nicely hidden. Oakey, buttery, smooth, nicely sweet, grapey, lots of tannins. Very gummy, awkward dryness on very backend of finish, resinous, sticky. Carbonation is high and fits the style, slightly detracts.

This is a kick ass brew, thanks Ty for sharing. I'm supporting Washington tonight since they're going to get an ass-whoopin on Sunday. Go Broncos!!!

22oz bottle thanks to FalconA!

A: Deep brown, almost black. Pours thick, with a tiny off-white head.
S: Sweet toffee, bourbon, roasted malts, caramel, vanilla, a tiny bit of licorice and a bit floral.
T: Taste is vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, chocolate and bourbon. Hint of citrus as well. A bit of booziness but it goes with this beer, not off-putting at all.
M: Full bodied with low carbonation, slick. A bit sticky, coats the mouth (especially as it warms).
O: This is a fantastic BA barleywine, among the best I've had. Reminds me a bit of BA9K. Glad to try this, hope to get another bottle in the future.

bottle, Brouwers 7th Anniversary

A rather large barleywine - not sure I realized it was 13% when consuming the entire bomber. This beer laid in bourbon barrels for 16 months and the bourbon is quite well pronounced. Given the trends noticed with Bbomb and KDS though, I do wonder how quickly the barrel will fade. Decadent layers of sweet chewy malt, chocolate, bourbon and more bourbon. Appreciate the haiku references. I'll take fresh b-bomb over this, but for decadent barrel aged barleywines, this is in the zone.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep amber. Not much head. A few wisps.

Smell - Bourbon. A grapefruit citrus aroma. Hops? Lots of caramel.

Taste - Caramel, bourbon. Some oak. Almost like an orange liqueur flavor. Could be the hops, but everyone at this tasting thinks I'm stupid fot suggesting grapefruit hops are giving it that flavor.

Mouthfeel - Slick and sweet. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Very nice. Unique orange flavor.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours a hazy burnt caramel amber with a fine, half finger light tan head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of intense caramel malt, caramel, plum juice, faint hops. Flavor follows, with caramel, caramel malt, brown sugar (the most distinct brown sugar I can remember in a beer), dark fruit juice, vanilla, bourbon, a light oakiness and a light hop finish. This is delicious. Nice creamy medium body. Very well balanced and tasty. Hits all the right English barleywine notes. A bit on the sweet side and although warming, covers the high ABV very well. I look forward to cellaring this barleywine and revisiting it over the years.
