Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

We are a family-owned microbrewery founded in 2009 to brew small-batch artisan beers made with the best local ingredients we can find. Located in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, we turn wine into beer, dream into Haiku, yodel in Esperanto and drink more Underberg than the Brouwer's Matts. To celebrate the 7th Anniversary of the Iconic Fremont Beer Haven, Brouwer's, we brewed this monster English Barleywine with floor-malted Maris Otter barley and Noble hops. Half was aged in bourbon barrels for 6 months, blended back together, bottled, and then we waited... and waited... for 16 months... through both the 7th and 8th Anniversaries. Now it is ready. Of course, please age this beer, but do try it today, and keep in mind, Brouwer's is not your typical beer mecca and this is not your typical American Barleywine.

Enjoyed from a barrage tulip snifter.

a - brew pours a deep chestnut brown with a cream colored fizzy head that didn't hang around but could be rebuilt. Slippery spotty lace.

s - nose is incredible. Leads with a sweet liquid caramel glazed with some woody bourbon heat.

t/m/o - like all great BA barleys the most notable thing about this one is the body. Silky smooth, rich in flavor but not too heavy. Liquid caramel and toffee with giant oak notes and a glazing of bourbon...raw bourbon, like backwoods bastard. Really nice, really drinkable. ISO more of this! Top tier!

A - Muddy, ruddy brown.

S - Slightly weak nose.

T - Sweet and syrupy with fairly mild bourbon influence. Toffee with quite a hoppy aftertaste.

M - Thick and syrupy.

O - For an English-style barleywine, I found the hop presence was too strong and had this beer heading in the direction of an Amerian barleywine. Although not perhaps true to style and fairly straightforward in terms of the flavour profile, it's still a tasty brew.

Happy to see another Fremont beer. These have always been solid so far. Thanks to Doopie for breaking this pair out for beer night.

From a bomber into a snifter
Brewed for the 7th anniversary of Brouwer's Cafe
Half the batch was aged in bourbon barrels for 6 months then blended. Subsequently aged another 16 months before being released.

APPEARANCE: Pours a 1+ finger, medium looking, light cream head with very good retention. Maroon red or bistre brown in color with slightly higher levels of carbonation for the style. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and leaves some lacing down the glass. A ring remains and leaves some lacing down the glass. Good looking stuff.

SMELL: Big nose of toffee and caramel, maple, some red fruits, oak and bourbon on the nose. Coconut notes with bourbon and sweet maple candy. Quite nice.

TASTE: Toffee and maple syrup sweetness up front, with bourbon and oak as well. Sweet flavors through the middle into a big and lingering finish of oak, bourbon, coconut and toffee and maple sweetness. Red fruit notes linger as well. Flavorful and bold, but not as complex as some others in the style. Very little hop flavor and bitterness, making it predominantly a sweet, barrel forward barleywine.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. A little lighter on the palate, goes down fine and finishes surprisingly dry on the palate. No real burn or heat lingers.

OVERALL: Another really good Fremont beer. While the feel was a little light and the flavor a little too heavy on the sweet side of things, this was still an extremely enjoyable beer that is well worth the effort. Particularly enjoyed the mesh of maple, bourbon and red fruits that this one brought to the table. Give it a shot if you get the opportunity. Cheers again Doops!
