500 mL, plainly labeled capped bottle, courtesy of a great trader in a recent trade, w/ a bottling date of 12.20.11. A few months old at this point, which is a shame, but poured in to a 22 oz. snifter.

Appearance: Pours a tangerine amber, collectively amounting to a darker copper that has enough internal hop haze to be nearly entirely opaque, though not quite. A rather aggressive pour coaxed nearly two full fingers of alabaster head out of this one, continuously replenished by what is initially a very aggressive, almost cola-like amount of effervescence. Ultimately, the head settles down in to a persistent, thin roof and much fatter collar, the collar itself draping gently up the sides of the snifter to crystalline flicks and tendrils of lace that have stellar sticking power. The haze and retention suggest this one's likely loaded with lupulus.

Aroma: Suspicions confirmed. A great light hop profile - zesty, bright citrus that occupies the lighter end of the spectrum intermingles with verbena floral notes and springy, minty notes, with just a touch of woody, herbal spice. Very east coast in feel, and balanced nicely by a lighter, more biscuity backbone than you get out of a lot of the caramel bombs people are passing for APAs these days.

Taste: A smooth, balanced mouth, lacking in a lot of the nuances and strength of the nose. Caveat that this could be do to the age on this one (though it was consistently refrigerated). A very balanced flavor profile, for starters - this is no Sierra Nevada, the bitterness imparted here is about on par with the residual sugars. The hop profile is similar to that observed in the nose, but a little duller and less vibrant - spicy, tart, with a very earthy herbal note suggesting lavender, green peppercorns, lemon mint, and even tart apples at points.

Mouthfeel: Bright, light, and fluffy, with tons of effervescence. Works well with the much lighter flavor profile, for a crisp, zesty, refreshing feeling brew.

Drinkability: Pretty solid. I wonder how it would have tasted fresh, but at 5.5% abv, I can't see it would be too onerous to toss one of these back quicker in an effort to intensity those flavors. The procedural aspects are all spot on, either objectively (the appearance) or in context (the mouthfeel), and this is one I'd love to try on tap during a hot summer day in Virginia (does Maine get this hot?).
