Enjoyed out of a 16.9 oz brown bottle with a date of 05/27/14 marked on the side of the label. Poured into a Free State Brewing can-shaped glass.

Appearance - Pours a rich golden hue with amber highlights that is mostly translucent, with just a bit of haze from the bottle conditioning. Atop the body sits a rocky three finger off-white head that retains for a few minutes before dissipating somewhat, but never fully going away, settling as a nice finger of frothy foam and leaving swaths of sticky white lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell - A very pungent burst of grapefruit and citrus alongside a pleasant light grainy foundation that reminds me of water crackers. Grapefruit pith, lemon zest and even some faint grassiness all contribute to make this one a pretty hop-forward take on an APA from an aroma standpoint.

Taste - Picks up right where the aroma left off, with grapefruit rind, citrus, limoncello and herbal notes like dandelion greens and fresh cut grass. Here there is even a bit of floral aspect to the taste, almost like orange blossom. The grains again make an appearance, but the malt characteristic is light and unassuming, a virtual cracker for the citrusy hoppy toppings (hoppings?).

Mouthfeel - Light bodied and moderate carbonation, with a bright and crisp feel and a dry finish on the palate.

Overall, just a stellar APA. I know it's not as reputed as some other hop-forward takes on the style, or even other beers in the same style category from this very brewery, but it is certainly just as worthy of being highly regarded, both for its style and as a standalone beer. I would gladly drink this again and again, especially during the ho t summer months.

Bottled on 4/29/14

Appearance: Pours with two fingers of clean white head. The color is golden yellow with some light accents of orange. Sticky lacing left behind at each level. Active carbonation is about right.

Smell: Grassy hops on the front. Light caramel malt gives a great base for the hops to shine on. Medium bodied fruits with some accents of orange peel and lime.

Taste: Light caramel hits first. Some sweet bready malts greet the drinker on the hop, with hop accents of grass and medium bodied citrus toward the back end. Finish is slightly sweet with some dry piney hops.

Mouthfeel: Bright carbonation is felt. Crisp hops and sweet malts do well together.

Overall: Plenty of good things going on here, glad I got to try this brew from Maine. Right at their three month mark, not really showing many signs of being too old. Haven't had a bad beer from Maine to date.

A - An impressive, frothy white head settles after a generous pour into a pint glass. The body is a murky yellow/light orange. Nice lacing as the level dropped.

S - A slight hint of airy hops, nothing overpowering. Subdued aroma of a backyard in summer, almost. Subtle, but pleasant.

T - Very smooth tasting ale. It's got a very simple layout with the malt and hops balancing nicely. Very solid.

M - Very clean finish. I wrote this before describing any of the taste, simply because it's got such a clean, sharp finish. Medium to light body to the beer.

O - Solid ale. I know this is the trademark beer from Maine Beer Co, and having reviewed some of their other beers, I expected a bit more. Very drinkable, very simple. And if that's what you're looking for, jump on Peeper. It's very fresh and crisp.

$ 6.49/16.9 oz bottle at Beer Run, Charlottesville, VA
Bottled 042914 at 40 degrees into standard pint
Aroma light floral
Head large (7.5 cm), white, frothy, slowly diminishing to irregular layer which varies from 1 to 20 mm thick
Lacing average – various size islands
Body light yellow, hazy
Flavor begins lightly flowery with bitter aftertaste, fades slowly; no malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate light to medium, watery, soft carbonation

Meets the criteria for an ale but seems pretty flavorless to me
