American Amber / Red Ale |  7.20% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our take on an American amber ale. Complex malt bill delivers notes of dark raisin, chocolate and biscuit. Copious additions of American hops yield notes of pine and citrus.

A big thanks to fellow BA and good buddy rfgetz for sending this to me as part of a care package from his recent travels...

A - A voluminous pour which yields more than three fingers worth of tightly packed ultra creamy light beige colored head with a bunch of big chunky bubbles sitting atop... Excellent retention... The color is a darker than expected crimson red with some lighter cherry red hues once back lit... Uber still with no discernible carbonation... A bit of lacing clings to the glass...

S - The hoppiness if first and foremost on the nose... It's a mix of piney and noble... Perhaps a hint of grapefruit... The rest of the nose is rather subdued... There is a faint whiff of caramel... Some light bready malts... The sweetness of some red colored hard candies...

T - The hops are even more pronounced on the palette... Very earthy in nature with some piney character as well... Perhaps some very faint tobacco notes...

M - Light to medium bodied... Brisk carbonation... Great consistency... A bit of lushness... Delicate... A bit of sophistication... A touch of dryness... Nicely done...

D - An outstanding Amber Ale... Bursting with character in all facets... Very little balance in the hop forward brew (but that's okay)... A wonderfully unique interpretation of the style... It's evident the amount of craftsmanship and originality that went into this offering...

It should also be noted that this is one of the simplest, but coolest labels in all of beerdom...

Brewed on 9-29-2012.Poured into an imperial nonic a deep amber with a large fluffy off white head that left multiple broken rings of lace as it settled into a frothy mass.Big floral and piney hops really jump out at ya along with sweet biscuit and brown sugar, the malt base is almost as big as the hop onslaught,a great nose.Sticky piney hops really stand out on the palate up front but a big brown sugar and biscuit malt base is there again to stand up to the hops,I get a little earthiness to round out everything in the finish. This is a complex flavor packed red,to me it's like an old school left coast hopped up red, great stuff.

This was the second beer I've had from Maine Beer Company, and I have been very impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed Spring Peeper, but this one was even better. In an imperial pint glass the beer was a dark red/brown color with a huge tan head that resembled whipped cream. A nice amount of lace. A really sweet floral aroma, very outdoorsy, and a bit of citrus. Strong pine taste, as well as a little grapefruit. Some malt presence too, making this a very well-balanced beer. You need to find this and try it.

Beautiful dark amber thick thick head with pleanty of lace

Beautiful hop aroma eathy piny. Wonderful very fresh

Nice very nice start with a slight caremel malt and quickly becomes hoppy and finishes all hops. The bitter becomes prominant but isn't offensive a well rounded hop taste very nice

500ml bottle dated 8/18/11
Pours two fingers worth of beige head. Very creamy, lacing clings to the glass quite well. Body is a murky brown root beer color.

Smells HUGE! Very complex as well. Citrus, grapfruit, lemon, grass, earthy. Some floral and lavender notes as well. Smells like English hops mixed with west coast hops and a dash of the east coast, maybe this doesn't sound right, then lets just say its awesome, or wicked. This is one of those beers you can smell over and over and almost be satisfied with out tasting it. But this is not a time not to taste.

Initial taste is medium sweet carmel and toffee malts. A neutral mid palate, some bready yeast and some creamy tasting malts. The finish is this nice and interesting grassy, earthy, mineral coating finish. This have a very interesting and hard to describe taste.

Mouthfeel is medium, medium carbonation, medium firm hop bitterness. Great job on the balance. Keeps me wanting more after every sip.

Overall this is a great beer. Big pleasant smell, complex taste and smell, nice balance of sweetness bitterness and carbonation. I'll be picking this one up again.
$7 a bottle.
