Notes/Commercial Description:
Our take on an American amber ale. Complex malt bill delivers notes of dark raisin, chocolate and biscuit. Copious additions of American hops yield notes of pine and citrus.

3 fingers on a tidy little pour (some audible sizzle but not the usual sizzle to zero, the head sticks around) , the head becomes all craggy, barely amber this is more brown with some amber tinge, it seems 2 tone in appearance due to the muffin top capping this bad boy, lots of columns of bubbles march (with urgent determination) towards the north, there is a mixture of lacing and legs... this is a good looking brew by all measures

fresh clean hops of the floral kind with a citric edge, a touch of sweet grass with a finish of lemon zest, some caramel malt peaks out here and there... pretty good

taste etc...
medium body with a nice malt kick and a nice hop bite, definite lemon flavor that then blends into some nice bitter flavors reminiscent of an English ESB but with a slightly more aggressive US hop profile, the initial flavor doesn't seem to last long enough before succumbing to the bitterness.. but then relents a bit wanting you to sip more... but after a whole glass.. I wasn't blown away ? strange.

enjoyable with a nice hop bite but maybe just a hair too much covering up the malt base. Tasty though and some nice hop flavor without crazy over the top hop flop, the lemon notes make it pretty refreshing for a full feeling beer

A - Very dark, can only see shadows through it. They call this an amber, but it's more of a glowing auburn; reminds me of dark cherries. Beautiful and resilient three finger cream-colored head with lovely lacing. Thick, strong, perfect head.

S - Citrus and pine I can smell from several feet away. A hint of malted barley. Very even scent. Strong hint of honey as it warms.

T - The grain bill is up front, leaving a toasty, bread flavor, but fairly light. Balanced with a very dry hoppiness. No sweetness, and a cloying dryness. Very slight citrus peel flavor as it warms.

M - Medium body, with a thick, clinging finish. Very dry finish, not unlike champagne. Very drinkable, and the carbonation produces mild foaming vice any real stinging.

O - This flavor profile isn't my favorite, but I think it's a fantastic job on the part of Maine Beer Co.; it's just not right for my personal tastes. You can really taste the quality ingredients and craftsmanship in this beer.

Bottled 05/07/13 (I love that Maine Beer Co. puts the date right on the label).

Red appearance, ruby is a descriptor that comes to mind, it gleams. Solidly thick off white head that has damn good retention. Aroma was plenty hoppy, in a similar vein as Nugget Nectar, where you get both the amber/red kind of malt aromas and a heavy dose of hops (nugget smell from both).

Taste was delicious, immediately planting itself within the upper echelon of all amber beers. Unlike Nugget Nectar, this one got itself flavor wise to be a bit more than just brash hoppiness and bitterness, it allowed for flavor intrusions of all kinds, be it the malt, the hop mouthfeel of a vegetal nature, the caramel, the mild sweetness. This is the archtype. Hides alcohol very well. Its a hearty beer that drinks effortlessly. Hops still pack pine and citrus flavor beyond everything else. I wonder if there are magnums in here, there is a peppery edge to it.

Drank this the night before the Firestone Walker invitational, 2013, at our campsite at Lake Naciemiento before bedtime before the big event. That's a lot of "b's".

This is elite stuff.

Thanks to Chris for sharing this one at Ritual Brewing Company in Redlands, CA.

Bottled 4/9/13.

Pours a hazy copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with pine and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is very pine and herbal hop forward.
