Notes/Commercial Description:
Our take on an American amber ale. Complex malt bill delivers notes of dark raisin, chocolate and biscuit. Copious additions of American hops yield notes of pine and citrus.

Bottle poured into an American pint glass. I was immediately struck by the relatively dark color, a near-brown reddish bronze with an amazingly thick and rich light tan head. Smells like a dark IPA, tons of spicy grapefruit and orange on top of a nutty, toffee-like malt base. Considerable herbal and pine character as well. Like its IPA counterparts, this Maine offering comes off juicy, fresh, spicy, and extremely hoppy across the board, although here the sweet malts keep up admirably. Near perfect balance, truth be told. I focused on the hops first, an evolution from grapefruit and orange rind to a lychee-like perfume to astringent green banana to strong pine and then mellowing out to well-steeped black tea. Fantastic. The malts deliver a lot of biscuit or semi-sweet cookie flavor, some toffee and hazelnut almost like a well-crafted English brown ale, faint chocolate and tobacco. The mouthfeel is quite bold and prickly, thin to moderate body and moderate to high carbonation with a slick resinous finish of unripe bramblefruit and tomato leaf. The fruit really develops nicely near the end of a bottle, straight up Simcoe raspberry jam and earthy pine. As was the case for Another Round and Mo, its hard to find much wrong here. Maybe the bitterness and pine are a tad much for the style? Regardless, epic brew and not to be missed by hops and sweet malt fans alike. This one captures both dimensions at the same time without either being swamped.

A- Darker than your average amber; body is a murky brown with some hints of amber. Big, foamy off-white head that lingers around and leaves lots of sticky residue behind.

S- Great hop aroma evened out by some caramel and toasty malt notes. Hints of tropical fruits, tree fruits, pine and even some earthiness.

T- Similar to the aroma, with lots of great fruity hop flavors coming through. The malts are rather assertive, with some caramel, nuttiness, roastiness balancing out the bitterness. Really a strong 1-2 punch of diverse malt and complex bitterness.

M- Medium bodied, medium carbonation, slight bite to it, somewhat sticky with a hint of chewiness.

O- A big, complex, hoppy amber/brown. A really unique beer which is saying something in a style that is typically rather one-dimensional.

Maine's dedication to the hop is more than admirable, and this one hits all the right notes. Beautiful pour, two-finger off-white head, nice lacing.

Smells as hoppy as a good IPA and tastes better than a lot of them. The carbonation feels lovely on the tongue, and the finish is toffee-bitter-smooth.

Seems like there's no reason to doubt Maine. Just buy 'em and drink 'em. And enjoy!

Bottled 3/25/14
Decent copper color hue with a pretty large frothy head with solid retention. Smells of hops, citrus, pine, and fruits. Moderate carbonation with some bitterness and stickyness to the mouthfeel. The taste though is where I got lost. Not spectacular and nothing over the top. Just kind of the typical pine and citrus. Seemed to be lacking flavor for me; not sure but maybe my palate was off or the 30 days since bottling has robbed the brew of taste. Overall I really wanted to rave about Zoe but I just guess I'll have to try it again to see if anything changes from my first offering. That being said; still a really nice beer just not my favorite from Maine Beer Co..

Appearance - Pours a chestnut brown/copper with two fingers of foamy beige head.

Smell - Caramel malts, citrus hops, pine resin, light tropical fruits, touch of brown sugar.

Taste - Caramel malt sweetness (just enough, not cloying) followed up by the piney, citrusy hop bitterness, about a moderate level to it. Hint of tropical fruit and brown sugar just to make it a little more interesting.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A touch of stickiness on the palate. Bitterness lingers into the finish.

Overall - For my first Maine Beer Company offering, they deliver a solid American Amber with a nice hop profile and caramel malt sweetness.

Date on bottle: 2/18/14
A: Huge 3+ finger tall head was created when pouring from an inch above the snifter glass. The foam is made of mixed sized bubbles and soapy looking, off white with an tan tint. Head retention lasted for days.. The beer is a dark maroon color with moderate haze.

S: Very hop forward aroma with moderate spicey pine and fruity notes (I'm going to guess chinook). There is an underlying sweet malt nose that comes off like candy raisins or gummy candies.

T: A nice firm hop bitterness on the first sip that fades over time. Similar moderate piny, dank, spicey and melon hop flavors come through in the middle. The middle caramel malts shine through and balance nicely in the beer with slight toffee and raisin notes. The balance is on the hops but not overwhelmingly. Also getting a slight roast character with some fruity esters possibly from the ferment.

M: A moderately carbonated beer. The body is fairly big and is emphasized with all of the crystal malts I'm picking up. No astringancy or alcohol warming, but its not the most easy drinking beer.

O: A nice flavored american red with a good dose of malt character and piney hop character. I'd compare this to a few other ambers I've had from Half-Acre (ginger twin?) or even a bigger version of alpha king.
