Notes/Commercial Description:
Our take on an American amber ale. Complex malt bill delivers notes of dark raisin, chocolate and biscuit. Copious additions of American hops yield notes of pine and citrus.

A two-inch, rocky, beige head leaves sticky patchy lace as it slowly drops, never actually dissipating, above a clear, dark garnet beer.

Pine pitch provides a powerful punch before pineapple and strong grapefruit take over. Zoe is a hoppy delight, with a token background of roasted malt that develops with warmth.

Bitterness is quite present as grapefruit opens. Sweetness is off balance for the style, but the flavors are nonetheless enjoyable, including caramel malt that builds with warmth. A lingering bitter finish coats the palate and maintains itself well into the next sip.

The body is medium to full with modest carbonation and a flannel texture, while the alcohol is about as expected.

This is the kind of beer one looks forward to enjoying with friends after work. It is more of a hybrid than true to any one style. If balance can be tuned in better, it would truly be outstanding.

Poured from bottle into a snifter glass.
Pours a nice deep dark amber, half a finger of head.
Smells nice and hoppy and good malt backbone.
Taste is really nice. Perfectly balanced with hops and malt to create a very nice hoppy amber ale.
Mouthfeel was not too thin which I appreciated.
Overall, a very nice hoppy amber ale. And I loved the story on the bottle.

2 week old bottle. 2 glasses, poured my initial 12-14 ounces in a pint glass, then the rest with yeast into a smaller glass to examine. pours murky brown. bit of sediment from what I can see through the murk. spectacular hop aroma. lot of bite, clean, subtle bitterness lingers

Very solid offering from MBC once again. Beautiful citrus hops dominate the nose, while the taste is a mixture of bitter hops up front and a delicate, chocolate-like lingering on the back. Appearance is dark -- like a mix of brown and mahogany. A prominent creamy head contributes. Not a session beer by any means, like some of MBC's other offerings, but Zoe is an excellent full-bodied example of the amber style. If you find Nugget Nectar overly assertive or fruity, try Zoe instead. I know many who prefer it.
