A. It is tar black with no light coming through, not even at the very bottom. It has a big foamy dark tan head with good lacing. It's thick.

S. It has a malt and toffee scent.

T/M. It has a very burnt taste. It is malty with a chocolate undercurrent. It has a grassy taste. Thick, full-bodied. Smooth.

O. Very rich and tasty. Not too tart. Very good stout.

Froths up past three fingers of loose foam, mostly larger bubbles, lots of dimpling, very dark brown coloration, the lacing is wispy but has stickiness to spare. Pitch black liquid, perhaps a touch flat and not a lot of shine, you can see little pin pricks of carbonation as the bubbles reach the surface, otherwise opaque. While there’s a good deal of roast to the nose it is not overdone and allows the chocolate, vanilla and licorice to sweeten things up, date and fig fruit, dose of candied nuts, lasts well without losing its relaxed feel. Medium-bodied plus, has a pleasingly dry texture without sacrificing flavor. Cocoa, milk chocolate, coffee more than vanilla. Carbonation keeps it refreshing not fluffy and soft. There’s plum, cherry and light fig going on. At times there is some booziness, odd given its relatively light ABV for the type. Comes up with a bit of mineral and earth for depth. Fashioned in a classic style, has length and cleanliness. Leaves you without much to say, preferable to just enjoy it.

Split a bottle during a homebrew session.

Pours a opaque ink black. Had a nice sandy head that left a tad of webbing.

Smell was wonderful, huge vanilla and molasses notes plenty of coco and espresso as well.

A very roasty flavor. More coffee than chocolate. Pretty big flavors considering ABV. Vanilla and honey notes are more subdued than in the smell.

Somewhat silky but not like a real oatmeal stout, very rich and slick.

Great stout, probably a bit overpriced but its top shelf stuff. Great nose.

On-nitro tap at GBD in DuPont Circle, NW D.C., poured into a snifter glass, drank 9/20/13 over about a half-hour.

A: 3/3 - rich dark brown-to-black (it was dark in the bar), unclarity (cannot read or see through), a rich tan-brown head that dissipated into a finger-width head; mild-to-moderate carbonation , undetectable alcohol legs

S: 10/12 - really rich bitter coffee and cocoa powder aroma with elements of tobacco and vanilla (unfortunately not enough for me based on the marketing), reminds me a lot of what I think of a little brother of Founders' Breakfast Stout would smell like

T: 17/20 - on the anterior tongue, there's an intense coffee and dark chocolate bitterness; in the middle of the mouth, some of the malt characters start to emerge with background vanilla; mild alcohol notes that blend, especially on the swallow

M: 3/5 - light-bodied and watery, which, I think, is the weakest aspect of this beer; some of the creamy aspects of nitro tap redeem it for me

O: 9/10 - an excellent smelling and tasting sweet stout with some intense bitter aroma/flavors; the Achilles heels are the mouthfeel and the lack of vanilla notes, but I found it an enjoyable nonetheless and, for a $3 happy hour price, I'm not going to complain too much

TOTAL = 42/50

A: Poured out nearly black with no transparency whatsoever. It looked almost as if it was creamy and milky. Four fingers of brown head with good retention and mass amounts of lacing.

S: Roasted malts and cocoa powder. Still waiting to find the vanilla… Ah, as it warms the vanilla comes out to play.

T: Catching all of what is in the nose. Taste is a little sour. Vanilla is present after the beer goes down. Not overwhelming at all. Also getting some earthy tones on the finish.

M: Medium body and creamy. Carbonation is medium-light.

O: Eh. An average stout with not enough of the special ingredient that is supposed to make it stand out from the rest. I feel like an imperial, oak aged, vanilla stout would've been a winning ticket. This just doesn't have enough gusto for me.

This pours a beautiful silky black with a half finger of chocolate head.

Smells of cacao, roasted grain, vanilla, and a touch of maduro tobacco wrapper.

Taste is delightful.  Smooth and sweet, with the roasted malts and slight astringency from the deeply roasted specialty grains playing a great balance. The back end finishes with just a hint of natural vanilla bean.

Mouthfeel is solid.  Spot on carbonation for the style.

Overall, I’d drink this over and over.
