Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: Jason on 05-10-2011

Our “East Coast” version of a West Coast-style IPA. Intense hop flavors and aromas of tropical and citrus fruits and pine dominate. A subtle malt sweetness brings the beer into balance.

14 days after bottling

Appearance: a nice burnt orange color, very dull and earthy. A large 2+ finger off white head that fades slowly and leaves large frothy legs all over the sides of the glass. Hazy to the point that I can barely see my finger on the opposite side of the glass.

Smell: hops- resin, citrus, pine. Toasty and slightly sweet malt base.

Taste: opens with toasted grains. A fairly strong toasting at that. Very little sweet malt character to it. Backed is full of hops, some resin, quite a bit of earthy, small touches of citrus and pine a long with a subtle lemony finish

Mouthfeel: fairly thick for an ipa, pretty dry. A touch syrupy. Lots of lingering bitterness. No where near refreshing.

Overall: I feel I have give Maine beer a more than fair shot. This is the fourth and most highly rated hoppy beer I have tried from there and only 2 weeks old. And I can hardly stand to drink it. I usually love apas and ipas with a toasty malt base. But the earthiness and dryness just make it hard to drink and not the most appetizing.

Despite a thickness in the burnt dark orange color, and so much that it's closer to opaque than translucent, this beer is actually quite bright. Some floaties make their way around here and there. The head is a pale orange-tinted one that's quite hefty at a fluffy and rocky two fingers tall. Retention is good, and it drops down quite a bit of sticky lacing all down the glass.
East coast represents in this beer, both in packing flavor without harshness or noticeable flaws, and in its bright and brilliant complexity as the depth is layered. Unique nuances seem to keep coming out with every sniff and every sip. Malts offer some toasted breads and a candy-like sweetness to balance, and in a way that really works with the tropical and citrus fruits the juicy hops provide. Those hops take center stage, the malts serving only to add complexity and balance. While juicy with orange pulp, orange zest, and dried apricot, there's also a grassy note to the bitterness. There's an addition to the overall character that's not quite earthy, almost like a fresh root or dry nut. More bitterness from pine resin lends itself to a thankfully lingering finish.
Carbonation is moderate and keeps this beer flowing smoothly while citric brightness keeps it from drying. It does get drier as the hops keep coming, but it's creamy up front before going clean and semi-dry in the middle. Crispness keeps up the whole way. It eases a little in the middle as far as the body, but never thins out.
