Notes/Commercial Description:
Our “East Coast” version of a West Coast-style IPA. Intense hop flavors and aromas of tropical and citrus fruits and pine dominate. A subtle malt sweetness brings the beer into balance.

Pours golden in color with a deep haze and a good one finger white fluffy head.

Smell is hop forward with juicy citrus aromas of orange and grapefruit along with a very faint floral aroma. Caramel malt adds a nice backbone and mild sweet aroma .

Taste follows the nose with lots of hoppy oils and resin giving a somewhat herbal grassy flavor forward with a moderate piney bitterness. Caramel malt adds a good sweet balance, bit the resin and oils persist well into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel has moderate carbonation a medium to thin body balanced with loads of sticky hop oils and resin.

500ml bottle, just over a month old, so I guess that means that we (me and the beer) are good to go!

This beer pours a mildly hazy, medium copper amber hue, with four fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and rocky bone-white head, which leaves a fair bit of layered dried sudsy lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of sharp, somewhat dank leafy pine resin, muddled quotidian citrus rind, pineapple cores, a soft mixed berry fruitiness, white chalk, gritty biscuity and crackery pale malt, and a further mineral stoniness. The taste is quite hoppy, but more fruity than bitter - orange, lemon, pineapple, and lime drink powder - that same chalky character from the nose, lightly toasted pale malt, a subdued Werther's Original sweetness, and a weakening pine and leafy astringency. No sign at all of the 14-proof alcohol.

The carbonation is moderate, in a tightly-wound frothy sense, the body a so-so medium weight, and plainly smooth, the exact nature of the hops precluding any interference here. It finishes quite dry, the fruitiness rolling over, and that chalkiness persisting, amongst still edgy pine and leafy notes.

An interesting gutting of the West Coast IPA bitterness paradigm, while keeping the rest of the hop goodness well intact. The malt perhaps suffers in this one-sided focus, and that powdery/chalky character, while weird, is not really off-putting in the least. Another (or was it the first - I'm too lazy to look that up) decent IPA from this brewery - glad to see them available around here.
