American Pale Ale (APA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our first run at an American Pale Ale. Flavors and aromas of zesty citrus, passionfruit, and pine present themselves throughout. A very subtle malt sweetness for balance, but this is intended to finish dry.

Pours a large frothy head cresting around three fingers of eggshell white foam, very whipped up and airy, lots of dimpling across the surface, the retention is so-so, the lacing is comprised of a few razor thin but very long streaks. The liquid is a pleasing light orange with a mild metallic sheen, quite clear and pretty, slight yellowing at the rims, plenty of fat bubbles, no beads, all randomly dispersed. The nose has a certain purity to it, milled grains, sour mixed white citrus, spoonful of honey, pine cone, not very sappy, minimal herbaceousness, soft cocoa maltiness, needs to warm to really release the peach, yellow apple, apricot fruit scents. Full-bodied, in fact a little too broad shouldered as it tends to progress slowly through the palate. Here it’s much more floral and the white to pink grapefruit and orange citrus a bigger overall element. The fluffy carbonation helps relieve some weight and create lift and mouth perfume. The sweetness of the apricot, peach, pear fruit takes hold with force. Some peppery notes but the graininess lost a bit. Otherwise, does a good job of masking the total sweetness and making it a blended experience versus bunch of soloists jockeying for position.

16.9 ounce bottle poured into a craft glass.

Appearance: Pours a big, bright golden color with a touch of haze and a big, pillowy two-finger white head. Moderate lacing.

Aromas: Wow, this beer has a complex, inviting set of aromas. There's citrus, and grassiness, and fruitiness, and some malt, and even a little caramel, and some nice hop bite.

Taste: This is a very tasty pale ale that borders on an IPA. The taste is full of floral citrus and there's a nice malt backbone and a little touch of booziness. Calling this a pale ale that borders on an IPA is actually kind of a disservice because what it really is is a complex, hoppy, flavorful ale with mid-level alcohol.

Mouthfeel: It's sessionable but has some decent density. A good beer to pair with any meal.

Overall: MO is a beer to seek out, savor, and enjoy. A perfectly executed, complex, flavorful ale with moderate alcohol. The real deal.

Poured into a Nonic from the MBC bottle dated 20140701

A: Clear body and a big white soapy head that settled into a tight 4mm disk. It can not be excited back to a big head, yet has medium activity still 1/2 way through.

S: Pineapple, tropical fruit. Modern hop, like an oniony azzaca and mosaic, is mild but present. Gentle and a reminder that lightly hopped beer must be consumed fresh. Malts are lighter 2row style with some very faint aliphatic hydrocarbon notes and malted sweetness are way back in the nose and do not get in the way, as the yeast also seems to be a very gentle and unobtrusive strain.

T: WOW. Great freshness and very hop driven on the uptake. Aeration of the uptake is initially very tropical and light, then goes to a sweet malt note.

M: Slick on the palate, mildly bitter in the middle and a slight malt dry finish. well balanced finish that stays creamy on the tongue for quite some time. Tight bubbles in appearance must be playing a part on that front.

O: crazy good Pale Ale, and easily eclipses my favorite from Founders. Great example of the style.

A: Cloudy, perfect looking pale ale, decent carbonation. Can't imagine you can make a pale ale look much better than this.
S: Grapefruit, orange, citrus, not much sweetness, smells almost dry, nice.
T: Very citrus, orange, grapefruit, a little bit of malty light sweetness, very nice. Quite dry, very pronounced bitterness, but not too much. Crisp. Very, very nice beer.
M: Would have preferred it just a little less dry, maybe a little less carbonation.
O: Really solid beer. Probably my favorite from Maine beer.
