American Pale Ale (APA) |  6.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Our first run at an American Pale Ale. Flavors and aromas of zesty citrus, passionfruit, and pine present themselves throughout. A very subtle malt sweetness for balance, but this is intended to finish dry.

On tap at brewery served in a snifter.

Appearance: Clear amber with reddish hues. An inch or so of pure white foamy head that lingered and laced well. Looked thick and syrupy.

Smell: Big citrus notes - couldn't really tell what kind of citrus. Didn't think it was grapefruit for sure from the aroma. While it smelled "nice", it wasn't really outstanding in the aroma.

Taste: The taste was clearly grapefruit-like much more than the aroma. Nice malty/caramel sweetness in the middle with some pine-like resin taste, then the citrus takes over again on the finish. A hint of green grassy flavor, but not a lot.

Mouthfeel: A bit lively, but the carbonation was not aggressive. Sufficient to keep things clean. A medium body - not syrupy as it looked. Very clean with just a hint of grapefruit lingering behind.

Overall: a very tasty brew that is easy to drink and enjoy. Refreshing enough for a hot day. The only negative is the price, but I would buy this one again.

Poured from a 16.9 ounce bottle into a tulip. Bottled on 5/20/14 printed on label.

Appearance: Pours a hazy medium straw color with golden highlights and a huge 4 finger fluffy eggshell white head. Excellent head retention and lacing.

Smell: An excellent combination of sweet citrus with just a bit of pine and bitter citrus.

Taste: Pine and a touch of grapefruit up front followed by some pale malt and just a hint of sweet citrus in the middle before ending with another round of pine and grapefruit. Aftertaste is mildly bitter, yet long-lasting.

Mouthfeel: Light-to-medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Goes down very smooth.

Drinkability: Excellent drinkability. You could drink a couple bottles without much difficulty.

Overall: Excellent beer overall. This is another one that walks a thin line between American Pale Ale and IPA, but I'm really liking it no matter how you classify it. I highly recommend checking it out.

Poured from the 16.9 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip glass.

a: Light translucent amber formed a killer two inch white head which dissipated to a heavy foam surface layer with dense though spotty lacing. Great! But let's face it, one should expect no less at $7 a pint.

s: Grapefruity citrus. Nice!

t: Citrus hops predominate, becoming more piney as quaffing proceeds. Refreshing.

m: Medium, smooth and easy-drinking. Clean aftertaste.

o: A top-notch pale ale which could easily pass for a medium-hopped IPA. Roughly on a par with Lagunitas IPA for taste, but heavier mouthfeel.

I'm glad I tried this, but considering the price, I'd pick Lagunitas IPA at 14 cents an ounce over this at 44 cents, or, bottlewise, at $10 per sixpack, 12 ounces of L-IPA would be $1.67, while Maine Mo would run $5.25 per 12 oz. Stuff us Scots take very seriously LOL.

I do have New England loyalties, but they only stretch so far. If Mo was the same price per pint bottle as Jack's Abby Hoponius Union, (about $3), I'd be a lot more inclined to buy it over the nationally distributed product mentioned above by that California brewery.

PS: Just drank the dregs which allegedly included the bottle conditioning yeast, and it was really smooth. Nice going, Maine brewers!

Glass: Odell's Belgian Style Snifter.

Appearance: Murky yellow-amber in color, slightly hazy with slight lacing.

Smell: Ripe oranges, weed, and a bit of peace.

Taste: Oranges, sweet malts, a bit of pepper and lemon zest.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium body with medium-high carbonation. Very refreshing.

Overall: A delicious APA. Refreshing!

A: hazy, golden, looks like a hef, thick head that turns very whispy like finely beat egg whites. good lacing,

N: Lemon, Wheat, hay, grass, a bit tart

T: Pine, grass and hay, bitter aftertaste

M: Smooth, refreshing, good carbonation, cucumbery- light bodied and refreshing

O: this is a very good Pale Ale, very happy with it. low alcohol content which means its perfect for a hot summer day. I can see enjoying this next to the ocean or pool. I will absolutely buy this again, and I'm very lucky to have it close to me now, but will seek it out when I move
