Style | ABV
American Strong Ale |  9.10% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
Some may call this a malty double IPA, some a hoppy barley wine. We prefer that it not be classified. We think of it, simply, as our strong winter ale. Intense hop aromatics and flavor (think pine, candied orange) blended with just enough malt sweetness to balance out the palate.

Bottled 013113

A: Pours a slightly hazy amber/copper color with 2 fingers worth of sticky off white head that leaves loads of lacing

S: Plenty of citrusy, piney hops with a solid malt backbone. Alcohol comes through slightly as well, but the hops really steal the show

T: Citrus hops explode with a quick hit of pine and earthiness. Malts hold up strong behind the initial burst of hops and lend a light sweet breadiness. Alcohol comes through towards the end, but at this point it is an afterthought. Finishes lightly bitter

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

O: Apparently this is their new winter beer (at least according to the back of the label). Nicely balanced and way too easy to drink given the 9.1%. Definitely looking forward to either getting more this year or stocking up next winter when it's brewed again. As with nearly all of MBC's brews, drink this one fresh!

Maine Beers DIPS

Had on tap at Novare Res described as centennial, simcoe, cascade and falconers flight hops. Wonderful.

The beer is red/orange with a delicate white head.

The nose, wow tropical fruits furnishings of malt and a flowers. Wow big a juicy

The taste matches the nose big and juicy cherry orange flavor almost gives a tartness it fishes with a pleasant and lingering bitterness . The alcohol is only apparent at the very end.

Wonderful

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Reddish amber with a thin off white head. Mild lacing on the glass.

Smell: Strong hops and citrus.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of strong hops and malts with citrus and pine notes.

Overall: Excellent beer!

16oz bottle poured into a Lost Abbey Teku. Bottled 2/11/14

A 9.1% strong ale that the label insists that I drink fresh? Okay, I’m game.

A: Large three finger head...looks to be well carbed. Murky reddish brown body. Nothing shocking.

S: Bam! Lots of hops. Quite dank. Pine and sweet candy-like fruit. A little alcohol burn if you inhale a little more aggressively.

T: Delicious! Wonderful hoppiness...same as the nose. Then some sweet brown sugar mid-palate, nowhere near cloying. An unremarkable hoppy bitter finish.

M: Well-carbed. Full bodied and chewy.

O: Reminds me of fresh Bigfoot. That’s a compliment.

Great creamy hoppy beer. Their signature style turned up a notch. Very lacy. DIPA strength, drunk exactly 90 days after bottling, bottle from Capone's. Big IBU without major palate erasing. Good drinkability. Fuller mouthfeel. CItrus orange aroma and flavour.

Thick, three-finger off-white head from a turbulent pour. Retention is good, and lacing is excellent web-like. Beer is a coppery orange, and very cloudy, leading it to be translucent despite a bright appearance. Tons of carbonation.

Strong citrus aroma, specifically sweet tangerines, as well as floral slightly dank hops, as well. Caramel and honey in the malt backbone. Very hop-forward strong ale (by scent). Delicate but not subtle.

Sweet and smooth flavor, initially a light malty mix - again, fresh honey, flowers, and caramel – immediately washed over by bright but subtle hops, which are a little drier than the aroma: grass, a bit of pine, and some flat citrus peel. Experienced is capped off by more malty sweetness, which lasts with a noticeable and pleasant aftertaste. Other notes: slight vanilla, tobacco, mild pepper, and brown sugar, all behind the main hop and malt profiles.

Mouthfeel is a little syrupy and flat, but still feels a little lively, despite virtually no sting. Large amount of hops gives it plenty of bite. Medium-full overall, very drinkable, and no noticeable alcohol.

This is a pretty solid and hoppy strong ale. It almost comes across as a reverse DIPA: a ton of hops present primarily to keep it from becoming a malt bomb. There’s tons of flavor to go around, and it’s definitely tasty.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle dated 1/31/2013.

Appearance - Big head on a deep copper body. Mostly clear body. Nice retention.

Smell - Hoppy and caramely. Slightly buttery. Odd.

Taste - Less hoppy. Very caramely. And really buttery. Not understanding if it's intentional. Not a lot of other flavors. No bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Slick and buttery. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Disappointing Maine beer. I'm just not getting it.
