A: Poured from the bottle into a Sam Smith's nonic-style pint glass. Body is black, with a big (3-finger), meringue-like mocha-colored head on top, which leaves behind thick splotches and rings of lace.
S: Nice nose for this style - some roasted coffee, some chocolate malt, but also piney, earthy hops in abundance. The nose is encouraging.
T: With my initial sip, first impression is more about the feel than the taste - it feels thin and slightly watery, so there's a slight let-down from the nose. Very roasty, with a solid coffee vibe going on and some char or charcoal. Also a healthy dose of earthy hoppy-ness. Lingering touch of burnt charcoal and piney hops. ABV of 7.2% not noted at all.
M: As noted above, a little thin and slightly watery. Call it medium in heft, though it drinks lighter. Carbonation is light, which is a surprise given that huge head.
O: Good stuff. A thicker body and more chocolate malt-type flavors to balance the roastiness and this would be a world class American Black Ale. As it is it's quite good, however.

Poured from the 3 week old bottle into the MBC ale hybrid weizen/pilsner blass.
A: Dark creamy ale, seems nitro charged. Opaque with light brown head that starts pretty big and collapses into a 4mm disk. Can be excited into froth at any time. minimal lacing and kinda brown at the edges. Tasty lookin'!
S: Neo hops, like Mosaic or Azzaca, mild. Malt shines through with strong toffee note.
T: Well blended neo-hop and dark chocolate malted milk ball.
M: Very delicate on the tongue, with a slightly acidic, almost lactic side of tongue with malty swallow, slightly thin on uptake. After swallow, it kinda wells up into a creamy, bitter note then kinda hangs around with a very slight hint of chalkiness.
O: Great effort again from MBC. Outright solid.

On draft at The Lark, East Northport, NY.
Poured a deep balk hue with a two finger frothy tan head there was good retention and lacing.
The smell featured roasted malts, burnt sugar and herbal hops.
The taste offered elements of charcoal and smoke with piney and herbal hops.
The mouthfeel was full with a dry finish.
Overall a superior black IPA.
