500ml bottle poured into tulip April/11/14

A nearing black with a deep cola edge, half a glass of mocha foam has staying power to say the least, at the bottom I have nearly a finger left over with a table top island so I'm impressed. Strange that it only starts leaving lace half way down the glass in the form of a few partial rings

S heavy on the pine and spruce, peaches, tangerine, and grapefruit are also strong, a hint of root beer and cold coffee but not much of the dark malt on the nose but I'm loving the intense hops notes, smells massive

T slightly less fruity, piney hops and much more dark malt, some char and bakers chocolate and the coffees a little stronger, great mix of black and green

M not quite full bodied, a nice bitter snap, leaves a little behind on the palate while removing enamel, piney citrus with a little coco just keeps going on the finish

O brilliant BIPA going on here and I now I'm always saying "I'm surprised this beer doesn't get more love" but I'm a little baffled that this gem doesn't even crack a 4 average

I could drink a few of these with no problems its hands down a great version of the style. So far Maine's gone 2 for 2 in my books and I still have a pair in the fridge I can't wait to drink.

The beer comes in a gorgeous black color with a fluffy brown head. It looks like a wonderful imperial stout.

The aroma follows with the Citra of bright pineapple, apricot, peaches, orange peel, and then a nice roasted malt of coffee and bitter chocolate, but mostly the citrusy hops. Think Wookey Jack.

The flavor follows with the hops in the front. Pineapple, orange peel, grapefruit, bright hop notes, along with a herbacious and citrus peel bitterness throughout. A very light clean bready malt with barely any sweetness. Then midway there’s a roasted malt, adds a bit of depth of coffee flavor. Very gentle.

My new favorite black IPA. This is still very much an IPA, with a perfect medium light amount of roasted malt.

16.9oz bottle, dated 031114
L - black with a huge persistent tan head that hangs around forever leaving some lacing as it gradually fades
S - piny, roasty aroma fills the room. Citrus and chocolate upon closer inspection
T - lots of toasty grain, dark chocolate, charred roasted barley, caramel, nutty, grapefruity citrus, pine
F - medium bodied, resinous but still very creamy, lingering roast and pine
O - one of the best American Black Ales/Black IPA's I've had to date. Not sure I can justify another $6.99 on another bottle, but this was well worth the try.

A nice opaque black in the glass, 2 full fingers if head with slow dissipation and nice lacing left behind. Smells of citrusy hops, fresh cut grass, spruce, Chocolatey/coffee roast.
Flavor is pungent hops followed by a mellow smoke, charred oak, coffee, dark chocolate, toasted oats. A bit if bitterness lingers.
Medium in body with medium carbonation.. A creamy silky smooth mouthfeel.
This is a phenomenal beer. Is there a style these guys can't nail?
