Notes/Commercial Description:
Hoppy and roasty American IPA, brewed as the dark-colored counterpart to Another One (both beers incorporate the exact same kettle and dry hopping schedule). Weez presents a blend of hoppy and roasty notes on the nose, followed by hoppy resins on the tongue, and finishes with a deep roast.

A - Pitch black on the pour, big 4 finger slightly wheat colored head. Big sticky lacing down the glass and a thin cap on the top from the head that stays around forever.

S - Mild aromas of citrus and orange pith and peel combine with soft porter like aromas of earthiness, coffee and bitter unsweetened chocolate. Nice, soft on the aroma, maybe lightly confused.

T - Follows very close to the aroma. Nice bright orange sweetness melds quickly mid palate to those porter like flavors of earthy burnt notes, earthy hops, coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Finishes more porter than IPA, bitter and lingering from both the herbal earthy hops and bitter chocolate coffee notes.

M - Medium feel, nice carbonation, slightly creamy and clean finish.

O - Porter meets IPA. Less IPA, but the flavors are there. Balanced, no one thing shines and nor really excels. Interesting mix of favors and we'll executed.

Poured from the bottle into a shaker pint glass. Dark chocolate brown to black brew with a very large, rich tan head. Aroma of melon and tropical fruit (mango? faint lychee?), grapefruit, molasses, dry chocolate wafers, and a little pine needle. Nice freshness and complexity on the nose, hop forward yet mildly roasted. The palate largely follows suit, although there is more dry roast coffee and cacao powder that threatens to engulf the pine needle, orange and grapefruit rind, Earl Gray tea, canned peach, and lime juice hops flavors ... Perhaps I spoke too soon, the hops are beginning to shine through as I type this. A pleasant lemon pepper spice is revealing itself late along with a touch of garlic. Mouthfeel is a selling point, quite thick and chewy for the style and with a moderate degree of carbonation. Finishes quite bitter, with more citrus and steak spice plus a little ash. Perhaps the weakest of the four Maine Beers I've sampled to date but still pretty freaking good. The cause described on the bottle is even better (as my rescue cat nods her assent).

Had this in a pint glass dated 40114.

Appearance: Nothing less than drop dead gorgeous. Beautiful stout like color with 4 finger head (okay maybe I poured too much) that was so thick and pillowy that it did not go away until the very last sip. Utterly beautiful lacing.

Smell: big citrus, mango but with some dark coffee, mocha, and dark spice.

Taste: classic IPA but with some porter aspect. Some dark coffee with chocolate malt coming through. Citrus shines as well with a clean finish.

Mouthfeel: luscious, just enough carbonation.

Overall: Another amazing beer from an amazing brewery. One of my all time favorite breweries ever. Just simply amazing.

Bottle dated 031114 06. Slender 500mL bottle served in a cylindrical stange. Beer has some intense citrus hop aroma as soon as I pop the cap, and pours as black as stout in the glass with a ginormous foamy brown head. Can Maine do a Cascadian Dark Ale? Because that's what I'm expecting at this point. But more than a Black IPA, this beer has some serious chocolate notes. Unsweetened cocoa is right up in the palate. Medium full body tends towards creamy on account of low carbonation. Needless to say this beer laces all the way down my glass.

To be perfectly honest I picked this beer up partially because Maine Beer Company has great reputation right now, and partially because of the dedication to stray kitties. But I'll get it again (if I can find it) because it's damn fantastic beer.
