This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Brewed with a new friend, Kjetil Jikiun, founder and brewer at Nogne-O. Our aim was to brew a delicate, sessionable beer incorporating elements of the saison and hoppy American ale styles. We used a blend of our house ale and saison yeast strains. The result, an ale, golden in color, generously hopped, with background notes of saison funk accented by soft rye and wheat flavors.

Maine Beer Company has produced excellent beers and this is another example of a really good beer. The four beers I have tried have had a similar taste. I think that people would be able to tell that all of these beers come from this company. Even though they have been different types of beer they have all been extremely good. This beer was a dark yellow color. Very flavorable.

On-draught @ Proletariat NYC. Brief impressions from a teku pour:

A: Black body. Pale khaki head.

Sm: Roasted barley, dark malts, floral hop character, coffee roast, chocolate malts. The roast dominates - which I *love*. Aromatic intensity is mild.

T/Mf: Acidic roast and the beginnings of coffee. Dark malts. Some chocolate malts. Cream. Floral hop character.

Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, well-carbonated. Not sticky, gushed, hot, boozy, or astringent.

O: Highly drinkable, and absolutely worth trying. More solid work from Maine. One of the better beers I've had in this nascent style.

bottle picked up locally, enjoyed from my maine beer co wine glass. bottled on 071613 (one day shy of a month ago).

a - brew poured a murky orange yellow with a thin bubble foamed head that hung out for a while.

s - grassy clove with some hints of banana and bubblegum.

t - wheat. grainy rye. peppery saison.

m - crisp with a hint of spiced bitterness on the finish.

o - overall a unique bird. as the label suggests...rye pale ale saison. that pretty much hits it on the head.

Bottle dated 071613, just under a month old.

A: Pours a super cloudy pale orange. Enormous and fluffy offwhite head. Head fades slowly with a great island of foam hanging around. Thin but constant spideweb lacework everywhere.

S: Decent citrus with quite a bit of rye malt. Lots of spicy black pepper.

T: Hint of citrus and pine. Spicy rye and black pepper dominates here, very strong through the finish. A little hop bitterness in the aftertaste, maybe pine and grapefruit? Still lots of spice lingering around and into the aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied, smooth.

O: A mildly hoppy "american style" saison. Quite spicy, clearly a decent amount of rye to go with the typical black pepper. A little one-note and simple but tasty and drinkable enough. Enough hops to make it a little unique but not enough to make it a belgian IPA of sorts.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 7/16/2013.

Appearance - Hazy orange. Medium white head. Thick chunky collar. Nice lacing.

Smell - Doughy malts. Belgian yeast and sweetness. Orangey hops. Alittle rye.

Taste - Orange hops and a grainy malt character. Less doughy, more of the spicy rye. Herbal and grassy in the finish. A little bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. High carbonation.

Overall - I didn't notice the bottle date when I picked this up. It would appear Maine beers sit quite a while. I was just excited to try a Maine beer I hadn't had. Clean flavors, maybe lacking some excitement.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a hazy golden color with two fingers of fluffy white head. Good lacing as head dissipates to a half finger layer of foam.

Nose has a spicy combination of rye and the saison yeast, white pepper, coriander along with caramel and biscuit malt sweetness. Not much fruit ester or hopping, though this bottle is nearly two months old.

A bit of hop bitterness in the taste, grassy and herbal like bay leaf and sage, but with a bit of white grape sweetness, spicy yeast and rye flavors. Finish is dry with some lingering herbal bitterness.

Light body and heavily carbonated, really sharp against the tongue and keeps it very dry.

A. A bit of an orange with a light caramel color. Some foamy white head with a little bit of lacing. Haze opaque.

S. It has a citrus scent with a bit of hoppy bitterness.

T/M. It has a grassy taste. There's some citrus. It has an odd kind of grape taste in the back of the mouth. It's quite carbonated. A light to medium body.

O. It's nice. Nothing amazing, but it's a good, crisp beer.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for giving me this beer; I'm always glad to indulge his need to give away beer

Consumed 8/8/13

Appearance: Hazy with some clarity, dark gold to straw yellow, starts with a nice, creamy, eggshell white head - fades to a wispy cap and leaves some nice lacing

Smell: Light malts, rye, and some saison funk - pretty clean smelling overall, which is to be expected from anything involving Maine Beer Co - pale malts, lightly toasted grains, and a subtle but important spicy rye aroma - some funky yeast, barnyard, and saison spiciness, but not a ton - an undercurrent of hops, mostly light citrus

Taste: Not particularly potent but definitely flavorful - some funky barnyard and yeasty flavors, lightly spicy with some clove - some light, fruity esters - some non-aggressive but tasty hops, mostly grapefruit flesh - pale malts, lightly cooked biscuits, and some spicy rye - nicely balanced and refreshing

Mouthfeel: On the light side of medium, crisp, nicely carbonated, very clean

Overall: Time to... ignore beer style criteria!

This is a good saison, and the rye adds a nice twist. It is far from the best saison or best rye beer I've encountered, but it mixes the two styles well. It could be better, but it's definitely worth a try.
