Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Brewed with a new friend, Kjetil Jikiun, founder and brewer at Nogne-O. Our aim was to brew a delicate, sessionable beer incorporating elements of the saison and hoppy American ale styles. We used a blend of our house ale and saison yeast strains. The result, an ale, golden in color, generously hopped, with background notes of saison funk accented by soft rye and wheat flavors.

Big thanks to Tauroe for sending this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a Westbrook pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy deep gold, with moderate level of visible carbonation and a finger's worth of white head that fades fairly quickly.

S: Rye and bready malt, saison peppery spices, and some barnyard funk from the saison yeast with a nice hop presence (grassy, citrus rind, and floral). This has a nice aroma, but seems a bit subdued overall.

T: Rye malts, yeasty with just a bit of fruity esters, some pepper, clove, funk, and barnyard. Then comes citrus rind and grapefruit hops. Has a fairly dry finish - yeasty and hop bitterness. Then some rye graininess on the exhale.

M: Heavy body for an APA, low alcohol presence, and a good amount of carbonation sensation.

O: This is a complex, challenging beer. There's a lot going on, but ultimately quite tasty. It would be interesting to see what a Brett addition would have done for this one. Recommended for a session of contemplation of the flavors in a beer.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 7/16/2013.

Appearance - Hazy orange. Medium white head. Thick chunky collar. Nice lacing.

Smell - Doughy malts. Belgian yeast and sweetness. Orangey hops. Alittle rye.

Taste - Orange hops and a grainy malt character. Less doughy, more of the spicy rye. Herbal and grassy in the finish. A little bitter in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. High carbonation.

Overall - I didn't notice the bottle date when I picked this up. It would appear Maine beers sit quite a while. I was just excited to try a Maine beer I hadn't had. Clean flavors, maybe lacking some excitement.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a hazy golden color with two fingers of fluffy white head. Good lacing as head dissipates to a half finger layer of foam.

Nose has a spicy combination of rye and the saison yeast, white pepper, coriander along with caramel and biscuit malt sweetness. Not much fruit ester or hopping, though this bottle is nearly two months old.

A bit of hop bitterness in the taste, grassy and herbal like bay leaf and sage, but with a bit of white grape sweetness, spicy yeast and rye flavors. Finish is dry with some lingering herbal bitterness.

Light body and heavily carbonated, really sharp against the tongue and keeps it very dry.

A. A bit of an orange with a light caramel color. Some foamy white head with a little bit of lacing. Haze opaque.

S. It has a citrus scent with a bit of hoppy bitterness.

T/M. It has a grassy taste. There's some citrus. It has an odd kind of grape taste in the back of the mouth. It's quite carbonated. A light to medium body.

O. It's nice. Nothing amazing, but it's a good, crisp beer.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for giving me this beer; I'm always glad to indulge his need to give away beer

Consumed 8/8/13

Appearance: Hazy with some clarity, dark gold to straw yellow, starts with a nice, creamy, eggshell white head - fades to a wispy cap and leaves some nice lacing

Smell: Light malts, rye, and some saison funk - pretty clean smelling overall, which is to be expected from anything involving Maine Beer Co - pale malts, lightly toasted grains, and a subtle but important spicy rye aroma - some funky yeast, barnyard, and saison spiciness, but not a ton - an undercurrent of hops, mostly light citrus

Taste: Not particularly potent but definitely flavorful - some funky barnyard and yeasty flavors, lightly spicy with some clove - some light, fruity esters - some non-aggressive but tasty hops, mostly grapefruit flesh - pale malts, lightly cooked biscuits, and some spicy rye - nicely balanced and refreshing

Mouthfeel: On the light side of medium, crisp, nicely carbonated, very clean

Overall: Time to... ignore beer style criteria!

This is a good saison, and the rye adds a nice twist. It is far from the best saison or best rye beer I've encountered, but it mixes the two styles well. It could be better, but it's definitely worth a try.

Pours a slightly hazy golden straw color, hint of orange, smallish sized white head fades quickly and doesn't leave any lacing.

Smell has a nice hoppy aroma, the rye adds a nice spicy character, touch of yeast hits the nose as well.

Taste starts out with a mild hop bitterness, more citrus than pine, some spicy notes hit the tongue afterwards melds with the pale malt, not sweet or overly spiced which is nice, carbonation is medium-high which is typical, finishes with a slight yeasty aftertaste but also dry, fairly thirst quenching for a warm sunny afternoon.
