Dark mahogany color, ruby edges. Almost no foam.
In the smell dried fruits, hazelnut, dates, figs. Chocolate notes, with plum and caramel.
A bit of oxidation (the bottle was not too fresh), but quickly disappearing and leaving new smells to release.
In the mouth a start with liquorice, then again hazelnut, dates, carrob, and a surprisingly fresh note, almost mint.
Then a light note of something grape-must like.
Important beer.

This was my favorite from the bottle of Maltus Faber, and therefore local offerings in Genoa (surprise this is more wine country). The thing I noted about their beers is less carbonation than one typically gets in American beers. This was no different, pouring with little head. The flavor and aroma is nice and the beer does go down smooth. At 10 degrees (that is percent in American) it is a very smooth beer. The lack of carbonation reminds me more of a cask style beer.

Bottle purchased at Birrae Domus in Rome.

Pours a slightly hazy chestnut brown color with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth dark malts - hints of sweeter caramel with mild amounts of dark fruits - figs and dates mostly. Also present are solid amounts of tobacco aromas that intensify as the beer warms.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Dark and sweet caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by booze-soaked dark fruits - figs and dates as in the aroma but now with more influence from raisins. Also as with the smell, large amounts of tobacco flavors enter into things midway through the sip to temper the sweetness from the fruits, carrying through to a mildly bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a slick thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I have to admit that I'm a sucker for anything barrel-aged and anything with large amounts of tobacco in the profile. That being said, this would be a very well-put-together beer regardless of the tobacco presence so that's just icing on the cake. Worth a shot.

N/A for this beer? haha I'm sure that you're joking! This beer is a MASTERPIECE! do you know the trappist strong dark/quadrupel? Here you have a strong dark out directly from a monastery. dark brown in colour, no foam. Very complex in the aroma and in the mouth with its dark fruit character. The body is big but however this incredible piece of art is rarely drinkable. well, only a word: a WOW beer!
