11.2 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. 9.2% ABV, 220414 printed on the label.
A - Sediment in suspension gives the merlot-colored beer a cloudy appearance. I poured with as little of it as possible. Fully carbonated, a dense light tan head rushed up to about three fingers and sank slowly. A little lace covers the glass initially.
S - An odd (not bad) smell reminiscent of something I can't quite put my finger on really opens the aroma up. That's combined with a heavy fruity complexity of dark cherries, figs, and a touch of plum that all come from the ester-producing Belgian yeast. Old wood house and yeast throw in a little loop from the fruitiness as well as the dark candi sugar and caramelized malts in the back.
T - Sweet dark candi sugar and caramelized malts really play out strong here. The fruits from the Belgian yeast esters also double up in the flavor. Fig and prune hints blend nicely with dark cherries and some maple syrup-like sweetness. No real hop presence at all on this one. The alcohol barely comes out either.
M - Speaking of alcohol, it's mainly perceived in the feel retro-nasally, otherwise a slight warming sensation slowly grows. It's a full-bodied, richly sweet, very smooth beer. No bitterness, but still not over-the-top sweet either.
D - For how sweet this one is, it's got fantastic drinkability. I had a craving to try it so I ran out and got this one and I'm certainly happy I did! Sipping this awesome beer on a cool day is perfect!
