Pours a thin creamy head over a deep mahogany body. Strong aromas of plumb, tart cherries, rich caramel and a hint of yeast. Flavor is similarly complexwhere to begin? Subtle dark berries, raisons, plumbs and a bit of pear combine with a more substantial malty sweetness. Toward the finish a bit of a spicy hop bitterness shines through, although its still not very substantialjust enough to balance things out. The body is surprisingly light for the hefty flavor and appearance. Mouthfeel is smooth with a crispness toward the end. The alcohol lets you know its there, but does not detract from the flavor.
A masterpiece. This ale deserves its reputation as one of Belgiums finest. The waves of complexity seem as though theyre being actively directed across the tongue. Suprisingly smooth. A great cold weather sipper!
