11.2 oz bottle poured into a Brewer's Art chalice.
Not my favorite style (BSDA), but it's a Trappist, it'll be great, right?
Brownish dark pour (I was expecting more black, cool). Alcohol in the nose, a very mild sugary sweetness in it as well. Overpoured the spent yeast a bit, oh well.
Nowhere near as much syrupy texture or alcohol flavor as I thought -- good. Really nice body/mouthfeel actually. Not much head retention.
Malt base comes alive as it warms up, a bit more roasty, not quite to coffee-like levels or anything close, but just coarse, a little sweet but earthy at some level.
Quality overall brew, far exceeded my expectations (I realize it gets a 4.31 but its also a BSDA). I'd definitely have another, especially as it keeps getting better as it warms up. Very well crafted, still not my favorite flavors ever but performs like a great beer should, hard to knock it.

Pours a hazy deep brown with a foamy khaki head that dissipates somewhat quickly.
I can smell pears, raisins, and dates as soon as I open the bottle. Notes of green apple, figs, and prunes become evident, with a fairly sweet Belgian candi sugar sweetness at the base.
Flavor reveals sharp pear and bruised apple underlying a doughy, bready malt backbone. Rich and rummy, the burnt sugar malt sweetness supports complex prune and date notes well. The finish is fairly light and dry.
Body is moderate, but the high carbonation keeps it feeling light. Alcohol warmth is a bit high.
Great ester character is balanced nicely by the malt. The carbonation is higher than I'd like, and a phenolic alcohol character emerges as it warms. Wanted to like this more, but the carbonation killed it for me.
