A - Dark hazelnut brown body, opaque in clarity. High flocculating yeast floaties reside at bottom of glass. Tall, 1'' collar of off-white foam stays throughout consumption.

S - Complex malt character with low phenolic notes, backed by a yeasty aromatics. Mild fruit esters.

T - Sweet malt palate with complementing undertones of phenolic spice from yeast. Grainy yeast character meshes with slight ending bitterness of hops. Alcohol flavor and spice phenolics only complement this Ale.

M - Medium, rich body with high carbonation. Very low warming from ABV.

O - One of the best Belgian Strong Dark Ales, and worthy of being one of the most notable Trappists.

Pours deep reddish brown with a thin light tan head that lasts forever.

Aroma is sweet, reminds me of brown sugar or cinammon, spicy.

Tastes of dark spiced fruit, warm brown sugar, spiced rum, very complex with alcohol presence just noticeable. Finishes with a sweetness only tongue that I've never tasted before.

A good amount of carbonation give s this an effervescence and keeps it drinkable. I think it also brings some of the sweetness out.

Overall, a wonderful brew, I haven't tried the 6 or 10, but I certainly will.

A: Muted brown and nearly opaque, with a good head that settles quickly

S: Deep Belgian richness with a potent alcohol sweetness rising above.

T: Much sweeter and smoother than the 10. Fruity rich elements go straight for the tongue and stay there, adding a pleasant sweet to each stage of flavor. It tasted like something ancient or steeped in brewing tradition (though less so than the 10). Overall, amazing. Much more versatile flavor than the 10. Makes me look forward to the 6!

M: Spectacular. Coats your mouth like paint (but in a good way, haha)

O: Not as arcane-tasting as the 10, but nearly perfect in its own right! A great beer for any fans of the style. I'll definitely buy again!

Chestnut brown in color; opaque, Gigantic head; though it dies out entirely relatively fast. Nice faint smell; slightly sweet and grainy. Sweet, grainy full taste with a slightly dry finish. Definitely full of flavor. Medium body. Nice, light carbonation. Very good Belgium beer; though I think I prefer the 6 over the 8.

33cl bottle sitting outside, clear skies, little bit cool, dark, time to relax.

Appearance: Brown with Red Hues. Large head didn’t hang around too long.

Nose: Brown sugar and toasted malts

Taste: Bursting with flavor. Dark fruits and whatever grains you care to mention,
but beyond all that a subtle sugary aftertaste.
Then a tiny little sourness. Just to keep you on your toes!

Mouthfeel: Good carbonation yet with a creamy aftertaste. Some warming afterwards, though not significant for a 9.2% beer.

Overall: Truthfully, to review this beer is the reason I joined beeradvocate.
This is just the nicest beer I’ve ever tasted.
Perhaps not the best, you can debate that, but it’s my favorite of all time. Yet.

For info: My Belgian buddies (who prefer the Rochefort 10), say to check the date on the Rochefort bottle ... it always shows a date 5 years after it was created. The closer you are to that end date the better, they reckon. Mine still shows almost 5 years from now, beer was still superb.

Purchased from Frazier Farms in Vista CA
Use by date: 4-7-18

A: Poured into chalice. Very deep bronze-brown and very effervescent. Head developed some big bubbles started at about 2 inches and settled to a quarter inch and held as I waited for the beer to raise in temperature.

N: sweet, light toasted malt. Subtle biscotti tones

T: strong raisin fruit up front, pleasant syrupy and easy spices along the edge of the tongue. Clove, nutmeg. Taste quickly gives way to a clean, yet silky aftertaste and mouthfeel. Perfectly balanced, alcohol is present and warm but only detected slightly

Very pleasant beer, a new favorite now. Would try pairing it up with a thick smokey pork chop
