I've been saving this one for a while. The first day of a long Christmas weekend seemed to be a great time to break it out. Deep brown color with a huge tan head. The head clumps and forms mountains of foam on the top of the beer. Tons of carbonation bubbles and a bunch of yeast floaties are visable through the haze.
Smell is malty with a slight fruity note. Some rum like alcohol smells also. No bitterness to speak of. Taste is where it really starts to get good. Just a great chocolate malty flavor with the touch of fruit and a little bit of spice. Also some bread/cake notes but really the malt is the prominant feature. The real high point is how smooth it is. The carbonation is lively on the tongue and it just goes down so smooth. The alcohol is well hidden but does make a more prominent appearance as things go on.
My first taste of a true trappist and I am not dissapointed. If it was only a little more afordable I would drink all the time. A great treat to have once in a while. If you have not tried this, what are you waiting for? Search it out and try it. Can't wait to try the 10 in the cellar.
