330ml bottle, best before 2018, poured into a Trappist Rochefort goblet.
The beer pours a dark amber color, hues of burgundy and earthy brown, opaque with some noticeable bubbles rising to the glass, and some loose sediment settling at the bottom. A wonderful, thick, soapy, bone colored head rises from the beer, about 3 fingers high that has nice retention and yields just a small amount of sticky lace. The aroma is potent, huge amount of rich dark grains, fig, plum, raisin, yeasty clove with some phenol alcohol. The flavors are so strong, huge bready grain, dark, rich and sweet, fruity yeast flavors, also dark, plum, fig, raisin, prune, a bit of chocolate character is noticeable with some brown sugar, clove and tobacco at the finish where alcohol makes another appearance. The flavors are true to style, boisterous, potent and impactful, the balance could've been a bit better as the malt dominates for the most part and the other flavors are more nuanced rather than showcased. The body is crisp, zippy and lively, coats the mouth well, perhaps a bit abrasively so, but the finish is soft and creamy with a bit of a dry bite.
Verdict: A really enjoyable beer and one of the benchmarks for the style. The body is a little livelier than what I'd prefer and the balance could use some improvement, especially with their masterclass of a beer in Rochefort 10. Definitely one to savor and enjoy, a great beer during the colder winter months.
