i ordered this from an internet store along with some bottles of westvleteren and st. bernardus. until this moment, i assumed the rochefort 8 was an 8% abv dubbel, like the other 8s. anyway, after taking a sip, it is definitely a 9% abv belgian strong dark ale, and a pretty good one.

poured into a tulip, this ale is a very dark brown. a great, light tan head lasts a long time. good looking beer, but i've seen prettier examples of this style. even before given a chance to warm up a bit, there is a lot to smell here. first impression of the smell is mostly dark, ripe fruits. i don't get much of the big belgian yeast smell that dominates so many other belgian ales, and this is a good thing. after a while, the smell is still the same. sweet and fruity, pleasant, a solid good.

smooth, full-bodied, delicious. this is obviously expected from any trappist ale, especially after trying the rochefort 10. but this beer surprised me with a really strong flavor and big bitter finish. not nearly as sweet as i thought it would be from the smell. the higher abv is obvious, not hidden at all, but it doesn't bother me. not quite as complex or memorable as the 10, but this is still a great beer that should be required drinking for all BAs.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 4

Pours a hazy deep brown with a foamy khaki head that dissipates somewhat quickly.

I can smell pears, raisins, and dates as soon as I open the bottle. Notes of green apple, figs, and prunes become evident, with a fairly sweet Belgian candi sugar sweetness at the base.

Flavor reveals sharp pear and bruised apple underlying a doughy, bready malt backbone. Rich and rummy, the burnt sugar malt sweetness supports complex prune and date notes well. The finish is fairly light and dry.

Body is moderate, but the high carbonation keeps it feeling light. Alcohol warmth is a bit high.

Great ester character is balanced nicely by the malt. The carbonation is higher than I'd like, and a phenolic alcohol character emerges as it warms. Wanted to like this more, but the carbonation killed it for me.
