Poured from a bottle into a beautiful signature Trappistes Rochefort chalice. The pour is a clear, very dark reddish brown color with a thin creamy-looking head. The nose is noticeably more assertive than that of Rochefort 8. I get notes of sweet berries, candy, a little bit of alcohol, and even some chocolate.
The beer tastes a lot like Rochefort 6, but there is more going on here. There are more bready, cakey, biscuity flavors in the front of the mouth and the high level of carbonation doesn't overwhelm the notes of fruit, jam, and figs you get at mid palate. This beer hides its alcohol well, but there is a very faint warmth on the finish. You also get some sweet tea and honey flavors which linger nicely with the fruit notes.
I definitely taste and smell the difference between this and Rochefort 6. The nose is more assertive and there is added depth to the flavor which allows it to support the high level of carbonation a bit better than the 6. This beer is definitely worth the price difference.
